A Look Inside Food52's Snack Drawers

February 23, 2016

Underneath each desk at Food52 sits a filing cabinet, all packed to the brim with files, cookbooks, and snacks. Actually, mostly just snacks: piles upon piles of trail mix, granola, crackers, and fruit.

Tapped into around 4 PM—that awkward hour suspended between lunch and dinner—the Food52 Snack Drawer has become an institution. It's even inspired a hashtag (#F52Snacktime) and Instagram account.

Here are some of our favorite snack drawers around the office to inspire your own midday snacking:

Nina, Email Coordinator

The only thing missing from this picture are Parmesan crisps, which Nina still misses (she finished them in one sitting). But you can always count on plantain chips, her snack staple, to be there. "Snacks break the day apart nicely for me: I can snack in the morning, then get a late lunch," she said. "There's nothing worse than lunch at noon—I'm always starved before I leave the office!"

Jackie, Francesca, Kate, and Hannah, Marketing and Events Team

The marketing team's shared snack drawer contains trail mix, chocolate-covered anything you could ever want, and even a bottle of wine. This one's especially near and dear to everyone's hearts because, if you ask nicely, they'll share.

Ali, Associate Editor

Ali's snack drawer is built entirely from a care package from her mom, hence its beauty. Her snack drawer mantra is: "Not a lot of brain food. Mostly chocolate."

Editorial Team

We actually only found vodka and chocolate in this one... The editorial team was not available for further comment.

Born from a "desire for a cabinet filled with more exciting things than notepads and pencils," the Janes' snack drawer is the golden standard for the Food52 snack drawer with a social media edge.

Oatmeal, Kind bars, pretzels, peanut butter, tea, peppermints. I usually have dark chocolate but I guess I ate all that. I have an apple in the fridge that I will never get around to eating.

Oatmeal, microwave Mac and cheese (Annie's), popcorn, Greek yogurt (in the fridge), and miscellaneous fruit.

Also double espresso con panna from Starbucks. It's my perfect afternoon pick me up and snack (I take the espresso like a shot and eat the whipped cream with a spoon!).

The problem I have with snack drawers is that if the snacks are tasty, I want to eat them right now (ie: all of the now vanished kettle corn). If they're not, I never want to eat them at all. I still keep protein bars and vacuum sealed Indian food in my desk but I don't eat them that often. I'm not much of a snacker in general, I guess.

Oatmeal packets, tea, almonds, straws, and extra silverware! We have an excess of girl scout cookies currently on the filing cabinet for our office :)

Girl Scout cookies are a MUST! There's a box of Thin Mints floating around our office somewhere now :)
