Cook Spotlight
Ginger's Kitchen
Ginger's Kitchen is the brainchild of food52 superstars (clockwise from the top) arielleclementine, Helenthenanny, aargersi and Sagegreen, the first three of whom live in Austin, Texas (and have been known to meet up for potlucks and epic cannonball competitions). Last weekend, Sagegreen flew down from Amherst, Massachusetts for the group's first cooking collaboration, escaping snow fall for comparatively balmy weather in Austin.
The cold may have kept people up north locked indoors, but this inspired foursome was free to roam around Austin, sourcing local produce from the farmers markets and cheeses from the beloved Antonelli's Cheese Shop in Hyde Park. Check our their brilliant uses of Explorateur Triple Crème in their cheeky Don't Hate Me Because I'm Waldorf salad and Dante, an aged sheep's milk cheese, in their Apple Panzanella.
Ginger's Kitchen has only conspired for one contest so far, but if their Brown Butter Apple Pie Salad, their Warm Duck and Grilled Apple Salad, or their raita/tzatziki-dressed apple salad (Raitziki!) are any clues, this cunning foursome will continue to be an inspirational force on food52. The best news of all? Ginger's Kitchen is looking for more collaborators!
And just who is Ginger, you ask? Here's a hint. For more of Ginger's Kitchen's delicious recipes, see their profile page and fan them here.

Wow, Sagegreen, aka celebrity chef!!! I just watched the segment - you did great and did us all proud!! You're definitely a natural! I'm not at all surprised they'd like to have you back! And it looks like you were having a lot of fun!

LOVE Ginger's Kitchen! But after I visit, I always seem to waddle — rather than walk — away. Great job, ladies.

Wow!!! Sagegreen, You were AMAZING!!! So wonderful and engaging to listen to, so natural in the kitchen. If you had a cooking show I would watch it every day! Keep posting links when they have you back! Seriously, I can't get over how much fun it was to watch that clip. Bravo! :)

You are so kind, fiveandspice! As I will turn 60 this next year, I dream of early retirement and a new venture. We shall see what evolves. There are so many inspiring stories on Food52!

Sagegreen, you're a natural! Time for your own cooking show.

Yaaah…Enjoyed watching your cooking segment, Sagegreen! You were great and soooo lucky to get to move around and actually “do your own thing”; my TV experience was a little inhibiting, they had me stand within a certain spot, and then the chef helper pushed the pot away before I was finished…lost about 2 minutes of what I had planned to talk about, totally had to adlib, had fun regardless. Anyway, were you invited back to cook again? :)

forgot to add...your Food52 stories were great!

Yes, they said they would like to have me back! Next time I think I will know more what to expect. It goes so quickly! I think this is a better link to my particular segment. It was nice to be the lead segment on the show and website today! I was able to get a 168 mb download

Thanks! I had chiseled off the ice to my totally encapsulated car which then started sliding downhill...but eventually made it to the studio on time....it was great fun! I have never cooked live before. The host was wonderful keeping us on time.

...and, btw - I would have liked to add to the comment stream below but couldn't - whenever I click on "reply to this" it automatically re-directs to a new comment box after 2 comments (?), tested both on F52 side and mine, no luck on finding out why.

If it goes ok, I will! Wish me luck with my TV cooking debut! Mind you, I better keep the day job. What was really funny was that aargersi's hubcab (a finalist in his own right from an earlier contest) was actually going to video us together as a sort of Amanda and Merrill team, but he got called out to cook elk and make a demi glace elsewhere! We still had oodles of laughs with all our ideas.

OK, here is the link to the video clip for the Wed Jan 19th 'spiced latkes' segment on WWLP Channel 22 Mass Appeal, which will probably get archived soon:

Thanks for the shout out! I just love Food52!!! This was so much fun to conspire directly. I had been so envious of those Austin potlucks from the summer, that when aarergesi invited me to come on down, I took her up on the offer! Tomorrow, a local TV station has invited me to cook one of my Food52 recipes live! I am surely going to tell everyone about Ginger's Kitchen, too.

This is just so cool. As if food52 weren't amazing and inspiring enough, Ginger's Kitchen broke the internet barrier and made things truly communal, cosmic maybe? I'm so glad A&M shared this with the rest of us!
