Summer might be the season of week-long vacations, but the Food52 team is just as eager to get out and explore during the fall, too. We look for destinations a little closer to home, planning day trips upstate or short flights to nearby cities. From nesting in cozy mountain lodges, a quiet Sunday at the beach, to picking bushels of apples (and apple cider donuts), our seasons are packed with all sorts of activities.

Enjoy a private island at Lake Saranac.

Before we had kids and all sorts of crazy things were possible, my husband and I would go kayak camping in Lake Saranac in upstate New York. The lake contains dozens of tiny islands, each of which has an individual campsite, complete with grill and outhouse. All you need to do is reserve the site you want, rent a kayak to paddle up it, and load up the hull with camping gear and whatever deliciousness you want to grill. Get away from it all in the Poconos.

Hawley, PA is fun little town in the Poconos where I like to spend the day antiquing, playing mini golf and go karts, and, of course, eating. Before you jump in lovely Lake Wallenpaupak, go to the Mill Market at the Hawley Silk Mill to pick up a freshly baked baguette and Calkins Creamery cheese for a lakeside picnic and then after you dry off head to Wallenpaupack Brewing Co. for a beer and poutine. —Mollie Doherty, Account Manager

Head up to Bean Town.

My husband and my friends are coming to visit us from Ireland, so we are going to visit Boston for the weekend in October to explore the city with them, and go to one of the fall festivities happening that weekend. —Megan Guntas, Digital Designer

Stroll through history in Quebec City.

I love Quebec City for a low-key getaway to visit our friendly Canadian neighbors—the city is easily walkable, rich with history and culture and has amazing food and views. Be sure to explore the Plains of Abraham, enjoy a fancy cocktail and the views at The Fairmont, grab a juicy burger at Chic Shack, and shop the stores in Petit Champlain. —Eunice Choi, Director, Brand Activation

Make new four-legged friends at Rockefeller State Park Preserve.

A great day trip I did last year that I want to do again this fall is a hike in the Rockefeller State Park Preserve. It abuts the Stone Barns Farm Center, so you can hike in the morning, then walk right into Stone Barns to explore the farm and get some lunch. —Annalee Leggett, Strategy and Finance Manager

Take it easy at Fire Island.

Sip cider in Woodstock.

I went to Woodstock with a friend in early October. It was a perfect, gold-suffused day. We wandered around the town (think beeswax candle shops and free spirits playing harmonicas and painting on the street corners) with cider in plaid skirts and then visited the artist's commune which was vacant for the season. Everything was awash in yellow and orange and fuchsia. We ended up at a pumpkin patch somehow too. Nothing was planned. That was the best part. —Maggie Slover, Copywriter

Take in the charms of Peekskill.

When I’m feeling particularly claustrophobic, I like to take my dog and go to Peekskill for the weekend, if only to remind myself that trees exist. We hike through (up? sorry I’m terrible at geography) Blue Mountain. Then, I like to reward myself with the eggplant Parmesan dinner at Gleason’s; it’s so cheesy and comforting... The downtown area reminds me of Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls, so Peekskill Coffee Shop (aka Luke's) is an ideal place to have coffee, read a book, and relax for the rest of the day. —Eric Kim, Senior Editor

Find your moment of zen at the Mohonk Mountain House.

This past weekend, my roommate and I hiked the Labyrinth, a trail with intense scrambling, around Mohonk Mountain House, near New Paltz, New York. Not only is the resort a lovely place to relax, but the surrounding preserve and trails offer an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle. My favorite part of the day were the sweeping views of the Hudson Valley. They made the five and a half mile loop totally worth it—even though I had to hold my breath through the Lemon Squeeze. —Me!
