We love us a good holiday roast, but one of our favorite Christmas traditions is the Feast of the Seven Fishes. Here's our take on the classic celebration -- or seven fresh seafood dishes to make a part of any holiday meal.

My husband and I did a Feast of 7 fishes dinner this year for 12 of us....and we started with Fried Calamari/spicy chile sauce, Fried Shrimp/an aioli and a classic sauce; Baccala Spread on Grilled Bread, Oysters Rockefeller + Raw ones....then moved to Mussels in Butter Sauce and Clams and Shrimp Linguine...with salad and bread...everyone loved it...(I did also make a good pot roast with Italian Gnudi for the non-seafood diner). I would definitely do this again next year and mix up the recipes to try different seafoods and recipes.

These recipes all look delicious. For our Italian Christmas Eve fish feast we have occasionally had eel and octupus, but our long-standing tradition is to do squid in tomato sauce served with pasta. We also do baccala (served cold in a salad) as well as breaded and baked in the oven. The other must-have dish is fried smelts. And anchovies are always served on the side!

We always have frito misto- with anchovies, calamari and little sardines. My grandmother liked to add peperoncino to the fry oil.

Typically the Feast of the Seven Fishes is served on Christmas Eve (La Vigilia). I've enjoyed this in Rome where it's traditional to include eel.
