And Amanda's Kids' Lunch, Too

by:
March  9, 2012

In our lunch post earlier today, we neglected to mention the lunches of two smaller FOOD52ers...Walker and Addie! Here's what they had at school while we were eating at our desks:

• Cream cheese and sardine butter sandwiches, with crusts cut off (says Amanda, "If you're going to send them to school with sardine butter sandwiches, the least you can do is cut off the crusts!")

• A chopped salad of haricots verts and ham with grated Parmesan

• Storebought Jos Peron butter cookies

We wonder which canned fish finalist the twins would vote for!

Love this post. Just goes to show that there is no such thing as "kids food" only what adults assume kids will and won't eat.

My daughter, 25 years ago, wouldn't eat a standard lunch (no sandwiches in the lunchbox, for starters) so her school lunch was so atypical that the school sent the counselor to talk to me about her nutrition. (He was embarrassed.) Lunch was a good yogurt, peanuts in the shell, a piece of fresh fruit, and -- piece de resistance -- seasoned nori strips. The other kids could deal with everything but the nori, but she ate it proudly -- she loved it, and still does.

I have to say, I love reading what Amanda's kids are having for lunch - because of the time change, I'm usually scratching my head about what to make for my two, when you are posting what the twins had on any given day. It always makes me smile and I've even pondered posting a tweet of what I've given them with the tag #inspiredbyamanda'skids'lunch. It definitely inspires me to stretch their taste buds and their pre-conceived notion of what kids eat for lunch. So thanks!!

To my surprise/delight, the sardine butter sandwiches were a huge hit!
