Racking up a small but significant point for small-time entrepreneurs, Washington State has passed the Cottage Food Act, allowing certain foods deemed as "low-risk" to be manufactured and sold out of home kitchens (renting or buying a commercial kitchen, with all the required certifications and rules, is a pricey business). As reported by Slate, this includes cakes, cookies, jams, and jellies — elementary school bakesales rejoice! As the piece points out, it will be interesting to keep an eye on the consequences (or lack thereof) of the law. If things work out, Washington could turn out to be a substantial proving ground for other states to start rolling out similar legislation. Fingers crossed!
