British Cheese Board Hunts for Cheesy Anthem

July 10, 2012

"You can use your mozzarella for some loft insulation. There's only one cheese what's rattlin' the nation…it's a crumbling mountain of…Cheddar."

Where have you heard these lyrics before? If you live in Britain, probably during the competition for a national anthem to Cheddar cheese. If you don’t (and with any luck), perhaps you’ll be hearing it soon on radio waves near you.

This article from the Wall Street Journal details the competition in their cheese-punning best. Staged by a local trade group to enshrine the cheese invented in the village of Cheddar, England, the contestants created masterful music videos set to patriotic British anthems.

Besides reporting on Britain’s efforts to ramp up national pride, the article shreds the idea that writing a cheese anthem is easy (sorry), exposing the many holes in that theory (sorry again). There were over 100 entries, and many have already failed to make the cut. (Get it?)

Wedge Issue: Brits Find Writing a Cheddar Anthem That Isn't Cheesy Isn't Easy from the Wall Street Journal

I have a thing for most foods topped with a fried egg, a strange disdain for overly soupy tomato sauce, and I can never make it home without ripping off the end of a newly-bought baguette. I like spoons very much.
