Take Me Out to the Market

Party to Pretty

Here at Food52, one of our favorite activities is sneaking over to the Greenmarket in Union Square, a wonderful farmers' market which we are incredibly lucky to have nearby. While we often pop over to the market for a quick lunch break or pre-work perusal, Emma Dime of Oh Happy Day suggestis making an activity out of it. Especially since Americans are not eating enough fruits and vegtables, what could be a healthier way to create a dinner party than celebrating the produce that goes into the meal? First, start at the farmers' market, gathering whatever looks most delicious and/or mysterious. Next, go home and get cooking-- if you are feelng especially playful, you could even split into teams and compete for the most creative and delicious dishes using the same core ingredients. This could be especially fun to do with your kids, teaching them about nutrition in the process, or could even make for a romantic locavore-lovin' date (think Portlandia).

If you receive a CSA box, check out Amanda's recent CSA inspired meal for some ideas. Another seasonal favorite is Merril's recipe for Roasted Zucchini with Chili- Mint Vinaigrette. And there is absolutely no better way to end a meal than with this genius Blueberry Snack Cake.
