Heirloom Tomato Hype
Tomatoes: you either love them or you hate them. (At Food52, we are kind of obsessed.) We often wonder how to grow better tomato plants; we work hard to come up with excuses to cook with them. And with our office in close proximity to the Union Square Greenmarket we are pretty spoiled: the tomatoes we grab on the way to work tend to be the kind of which dreams are made.
A juicy summer tomato from the market, sliced up and sprinkled with sea salt, makes the perfect summer lunch -- or any meal for that matter. But a mealy, flavorless tomato is what gives the fruit a tarnished reputation. When deciding which tomatoes to buy at the market, many shoppers feel like stock brokers -- not only are there many tempting choices, but these gems are also often pricey. Beth Teitell of the Boston Globe discusses heirloom-mania in her article Are heirloom tomatoes worth the buzz?

I test recipes as a hobby. I made two summer salads, both with fresh tomatoes. Used a local market's mini tomatoes in the first recipe. The tomato taste was just okay. However when I used mini heirloom tomatoes from our CSA box, the taste of the tomatoes was vibrant and hearty. It really made the second salad remarkable, like 5 on a 5 point scale. The difference was amazing.
When are you going to cover fresh corn? Or did I miss it? :-/ Another thing I love about summer.

Tomatoes are one of my favorites they're practically are a food group in our house. This year we grew many different varieties and some of our favorites are the sweet 100's, and Arkansas Traveler; so for us a good hybrid and an heirloom were the winners this tomato season.
