12 Ways to Make Cabbage Sexy

January 26, 2015

Since we have a soft spot for cabbage, the ugly duckling of vegetables, here is an updated repost.
This winter, cabbage is shrugging off that sheepskin coat and stepping out of those muddy boots: It is peasant food no more. It's sexy. It's seductive. It's suspiciously delicious (or, really, un-suspiciously, because cabbage is delicious anyway). Here are our favorite ways to use winter's most hated-on vegetable -- grab a head and start chopping. (And with one head of cabbage, you'll be able to make a few of these.)

Julie Sahni has a dreamy recipe for cabbage with ginger and turmeric and tomatoes and some hot pepper... I want some now.

Sliced or chopped, lightly coated with olive oil and cooked on low until soft, about an hour, leaves it sweet and nutty, delicious all by itself.

How do I love thee, cabbage, let me count the ways.

What is not sexy about peasant food? It's my favorite kind!

White cabbage is delicious as a "green" vegetable side dish when chopped and lightly sauteed in butter with a little salt and pepper. Also delicious with apples and onions and/or sausage. Roasted or sauteed on the stovetop. Also delicious cut into wedges, draped in bacon, and roasted until the bacon is crispy. Also delicious browned (with or without onions) a la Eastern European cuisine and served with egg noodles. Similarly, I've made mujaddarah (onions cooked to dark brown in olive oil and mixed with lentils and wheat bulgur) before and added shredded cabbage - yum!

Wow love that idea about the mujaddarah with cabbage!

Just brown chopped or shredded cabbage with the onions - it ads heft and vitamins and tastes wonderful!
