Healthy Green Kitchen

by:
April  7, 2010

Winnie Abramson embraces an open, eco-minded approach to food and cooking on her blog, Healthy Green Kitchen. You might have heard of Abramson’s parents — Barry and Susan Wine — and their iconic 1980s Manhattan restaurant, The Quilted Giraffe. At an early age, Abramson learned to cook and appreciate good food, in her parents’ restaurant kitchen and on trips with her family to Europe and Japan. Discouraged from joining the family business, she studied Japanese then went to naturopathic medical school in Seattle, earning her doctorate.

Abramson says that she was “a little late to the food blog party,” and admits that she only realized such things existed a couple of years ago. When her husband bought her a camera, though, she quickly caught on and now posts updates to Healthy Green Kitchen three to four times a week.

Abramson is definitely healthy, but she's not fanatical, and her recipes are the kind that you can eat and enjoy without feeling deprived or upset that you went the healthy route. Take her Soba Vegetable Salad with Miso Tahini Dressing or her Edamame Dip. She says she will eat anything, as long as it's real food. She thinks this is what sets her blog apart. “Many ‘healthy’ blogs focus on doing without something—animal products, fat, gluten,” she says. “My recipes, like my Orange and Fennel Salad, are not overly complicated. I am busy, so I assume my readers are too. I also try not to be preachy about nutrition.”

Abramson's food is a far jump from the caviar beggar's purses and wasabi pizza of her youth. But it is no less delicious.
