Potluck

UPDATE: Food, Inc. Potlucks

by:
April 16, 2010

If you haven't seen the movie Food, Inc. yet, we highly recommend it. As conscientious food-lovers, we think the more people who see it, the better. So we're excited to hear that PBS will be broadcasting Food, Inc. next Wednesday, April 21 at 9pm and is encouraging viewers to get together that night, throw a potluck and watch and discuss the film together. Given the food52 community's enthusiasm for potlucking, we thought you all might be interested in taking part. Watch the trailer below and, for more information on hosting your own Food, Inc. potluck, click here.

UPDATE: Here are a few more details on the broadcast and reasons to get involved and throw a potluck viewing party!

Shop the Story

- Go to the PBS Food, Inc. webpage between April 22 and May 3rd and tell them about your potluck for a chance to win a gift basket of free stuff (autographed books by Michael Pollan and Eric Schlosser, sustainable coffee from Equator Coffees and organic teas from Numi Tea, tote bags, biodegradable wine glasses and more).

- Join the POV Food, Inc. Flickr Group and add photos from your potluck (and see the POV team's potluck held last week).

- Get potluck-friendly recipe ideas from participating bloggers (including lots from food52!)

- Share this link to POV's free lending library program with any NGO, community-based organization, school or library that might be interested in using Food, Inc. as an educational resource.

I'm not too sure I would be able to eat while watching this movie!

They recommend that you eat and then watch the movie. This is a good idea. It says they are streaming the film live for several days after the time indicated for the event so people should be able to plan accordingly. Everyone should see this film, whether or not they have or attend a potluck for discussing it. ;o)

You may never eat ground beef again (unless you grind it yourself) after watching this movie!

There is a small, but very enthusiastic group of DC Food52'ers meeting at my house April 25th. If you're in the area, please send me a food52 message to join the fun. PS We made these plans before the Food, Inc. potluck was announced... drat!

MrsW, you can watch Food Inc. on April 25. According to the PBS info linked above, "Food, Inc. will also be streaming online in its entirety for 1 week after the broadcast, from April 22nd to April 29th." If that's not convenient, have someone order it from Netflix. That's how I saw it initially. It's thought provoking though horrifying, and very, very interesting. ;o)
