Travel Food Photo Contest: The Winner!

by:
June  9, 2010

Many thanks to everyone who submitted photos and voted in our travel food photo contest. The editors of Food52 and of Tablet Hotels have chosen a winner, but it was not an easy decision (we collectively received over 1,600 beautiful photos!).

  • Man with red purse and live chicken, Li Jiang, Yunnan, China.
  • Tai Power Seeff, Li Jiang, Yunnan, China

Congratulations to Tai Power Seeff -- the lucky winner of 2 free nights at Healdsburg Modern Cottages (with drinks and appetizers for two at Barndiva) plus $400 in kitchen products from OXO. Our judges chose Tai's photo as the best example of the spirit of the competition -- it's a captivating image, and it goes far beyond traditional food photography, managing to convey, through juxtaposition, a bit of the strange surreality of foreign travel.

And because people voted in such droves across Tablet's blog Tablet Talk and food52, Tablet has generously added a second prize for the winner of the popular vote: Crystal Brakke, whose Maine lobster photo charmed us all, will also receive two free nights at the Soho Grand in New York City!

  • Maine Lobster
  • Crystal Brakke, Maine

Congratulations to both winners and thanks again to all who participated!

Everybody seemed to love the chicken and the red purse picture, but I think that there were better photos that captured a sense of place, something exotic, as the michelin guide would say, "Worth a Journey." I thought the top photos that took us away from our own kitchens were the Uzbekistan and Turkey pictures, because they featured food and people in another place, in a well composed artistic photograph. Sorry, I can find that lobster in my own local fish market. I saw the contest as a National Geographic moment, and we clearly have different taste. Putting a cute kid in a photo with a burnt fish does not say travel; it says "bad photo." I liked any of the pictures that would have been likely to appear in the travel pages of a magazine; you had a nice selection of foreign locations that gave a the spirit of the place and something unusual to eat. For all we know, that chicken is the latest addition for the chicken coop instead of the soup pot.
