Dark Rye's Itty Bitty Farm

November  7, 2013

We are excited to bring you videos from Dark Rye, an online magazine created by our friends at Whole Foods Market. The magazine explores food, health, sustainability, design, tech and social enterprise.

Today: A San Francisco family shows us that you don't need a rooftop to farm in the city.

There is a lot of talk these days about factory farming and the affect that it has on our food system. Heidi Kooy sought to cut through all the noise and understand every step of where her family's food originated from. She thought there had to be a way of providing an alternative food source for her husband, and daughter Ute. But living in the metropolitan Excelsior neighborhood of San Francisco, Kooy didn't have rolling acres or a swimming pool at her disposal -- in fact she only had her 1,000 square foot backyard. Luckily, that didn't stop her -- and the Itty Bitty Farm in the City was born. Starting off with a vegetable garden, and moving on to chickens and miniature goats (who needs a lawnmower?!), the Kooy's now have a short walk in the morning to grab eggs for scrambling.

I LOVE Dark Rye! Such awesome videos. Did you see the hard cider one? I want to go ferment apples now. And get a pet goat.
