The weather's getting warmer, so we thought it was time for something cool to drink. No alcohol is necessary (although it's not discouraged either), but make sure your submission is light and refreshing, in honor of the arrival of spring.
These are not your usual contests. We have a slightly nutty
system but it works. Together, the Food52 community has created two
cookbooks this way -- there's no stopping us now. Read about it
Just three ingredients, other than water and ice: lime, mint and sugar.
Amanda makes sure not to leave a drop of juice in those limes. After all, you need a full cup of juice!
Mint, sugar and water are ready for their big moment on the stove.
The mint leaves turn a vibrant green as the liquid begins to heat up.
Then the color starts to dull, and the leaves crinkle up like toes that have spent too much time in the tub.
After the syrup cools, you strain out the mint leaves and make your drinks! Make sure to start with plenty of ice.
After the mint syrup, you add an ounce of that hard-won lime juice.
And top it off with club soda and a slice of lime.
Lime, raspberries, sugar and sparkling water is all you need.
We used frozen raspberries, and they worked out beautifully.
cheese1227 has you add lime zest to the raspberries, giving the drink an extra zing.
You heat the sugar, lime zest and raspberries just until the sugar is dissolved -- you don't want to cook raspberries because you want to preserve their fresh flavor.
Then it's time to strain all the seeds out. Merrill got this fun job, and she faced it bravely.
Time to assemble. First ice, then syrup.
Then fresh lime juice.
Pouring the sparkling water takes great concentration.
Time for sipping.
