Rittenhouse Rye (100 proof) is the way to go, and it's affordable, to boot (about $20 for a 750 mL bottle). I'm not the only one who thinks so: http://drinks.seriouseats...

I love Bulleit. It's small batch, so I don't know how available it is. Our favorite bartender swears by Old Overholt.

I've used the Bulleit Rye and Woodford Reserve non-rye whiskey for this drink. Both work well, and we actually preferred the Woodford.
