It's a pity that French type canning jars have become a "gourmet" item (ie people tend to charge about 18 times what they should cost)- they're really very practical for many things. Even the gaskets have gotten difficult to find at any sort of reasonable price.
I can't answer the price question, but I have always wondered: why buy Weck jars when Ball or Kerr mason jars are so widely available, so durable, and so much less expensive? Is it for looks? It surely can't be for that cumbersome rubber seal and glass lid (try lifting dozens of those out of a hot canner). Maybe someone can tell me why they are so popular?
I totally agree. I bought one to keep my ghee in because it was so cute, but that skinny gasket and awkward latches drove me nuts. I thought it was defective until I looked at others.
I use both. But Weck has some different shapes which I like. They also make a nice, heavy plastic lid (similar to the ones for working glasses) that can be used in place of the glass lid. I only use the gasket and lid when canning.
I bought a lavender wreath that was supposed to be "exclusive" to provisions but it is not. It's sold at Williams-Sonoma and other stores. Hmmm. - Chops
The wreaths from Creekside Farms are beautiful. I first found them here at Food52. So happy I did. I have ordered my Christmas Wreaths from them for the past two years. They are beautiful and fresh.
Thank you Food52 for introducing not only the wreaths but many other fine products.
Hi Deborah, thanks for bringing this to our attention. After some investigating, it looks like there are a few Weck jars that are being sold for less on Weck.com (at prices that other retailers like ourselves are not able to match). We are going to get in contact and see what can be done. In general though, Weck seems to have varied prices online due to different distributing sources (who are bringing these jars in from Germany). Regardless, we understand it's a poor experience to not have the best price provided and will do everything we can to work with our retail partners in order to resolve this. Thanks again for taking the time to get in touch and we hope to have a solution for this soon.
As someone who has always bought the jars and accessories directly from them, I hope the solution is not to convince them to raise their prices to match yours.
