It is ground sassafras (did I spell that right?) and it should be in the spice section by the cajun seasonings and things. If you have a Savory Spice Shop or something like that they will have it too ... worst case, you can order on line! Good luck!!!

Penzey's definitely has gumbo file--I bought it there myself recently.
