Author Notes: Portland is big on food carts. One of my favorite carts is Perierra Crêperie which makes amazing milkshakes in addition to yummy crêpes. The shake I find myself craving is their avocado sea salt shake. This is my version. I hope you enjoy! - hardlikearmourhardlikearmour

Food52 Review: Pull all thoughts of guacamole out of your mind when deciding whether or not to try this luxurious frosty treat. This shake has the creamiest, dreamiest texture imaginable and the slight hints of salt and coconut really put it over the top. I tried this with both ripe avocados and with ones that were still pretty firm. The batch with the riper avocados was richer and more buttery whereas avocados that were slightly under-ripe lent a fruitier note. I tried this with lemon and lime juice and both work well, although I slightly preferred the lime juice.alliecooks

Serves 2

  • 1 1/2 small hass avocados or 1 large
  • 1 tablespoon lemon or lime juice
  • 1 cup coconut ice cream
  • 3/4 to 1 cups milk (or coconut milk beverage found in the dairy section of well-stocked grocery stores)
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoons fleur de sel
  • Simple syrup or agave to taste
  1. Cut avocado(s) in half and remove the pit. Scoop the meat into a blender. Add the lemon juice, ice cream, milk, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Blend until smooth. Taste, add more salt or sweetener, and briefly blend. Divide into 2 glasses, sprinkle with a tiny pinch of salt, place a straw in each glass, and serve.

So great to see this and I know how delicious this is!! My family are from Sri Lanka and, when I was a child growing up in Australia, this was the only way we ate avocado. I was embarrassed about that because everyone else I knew ate avocado in salads or other more savoury forms. It makes me smile to now think that they were the ones missing out!! :)

I also added maybe a cup or more of ICE so it was nice and cold!

This was delicious! I didn't have coconut ice cream so used butter pecan but added 2T of unrefined coconut oil. It was rich but NOT sweet. And the salt was so nice on top. My roomie who just doesn't like sweet stuff loved it too!

I am making umami burgers this weekend (fish sauce, shiitake powder, bonito flakes) do you think this would follow that up nicely?

So creamy and enticing, I've never seen coconut ice cream, what is your favorite?

There are a couple of brands of non-dairy coconut ice cream - I like the Coconut Bliss best, but So Delicious is also good.

Great! I've seen So Delicious products, will look for Coconut Bliss, too.

WOW this is delicious - I've been looking for a way to add more avocado into my breakfast meal! It's super healthy with all of its vitamins and antioxidants - and it keeps you full all day! This shake is exactly what I'm looking for :)

wow, this sounds great. I love Perierra Creperie, too, but I've never had their avocado shake. Have you had the avocado shake at Pho Van? It's really tasty, too!

Thanks, vrunka! I've had the Pho Van avocado smoothie, and it's awesome. I went with the PC version since I'd had one recently and it'd been a while since I'd been to Pho Van. Have you had their banana blossom salad? Sooo good.

Yummmm.... I had a very memorable avocado shake in Thailand. I think it was made with condensed milk. Really, you can never go wrong with condensed milk, IMO.

Would coconut water work in place of the 3/4 cup coconut milk beverage? AKA *found in the dairy section of well-stocked grocery stores", which pretty much excludes the state of Montana.
