Author Notes: This is my mother's smoothie recipe. Unlike other smoothies, this one will get you through to lunchtime. You can easily substitute or add other berries (fresh or frozen). - MZGMZG

Food52 Review: I’ll admit, when I agreed to test MZG’s raspberry smoothie, I was intrigued and a little skeptical. With both kefir and buttermilk, would the smoothie be over-the-top tangy? I shouldn’t have worried: The clever addition of maple syrup rounds out the flavors perfectly. The resulting smoothie has just the right balance of creamy, sweet, and tangy. It’s also a great way to use up buttermilk you may have hanging out in your fridge. Thanks, MZG, for sharing your mom's smoothie. I'll be making it again and again. - EmilyCEmilyC

Serves 1-2

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup plain kefir
  • 1/2 cup frozen or fresh raspberries
  • 1 splash maple syrup
  1. Put all the ingredients into a blender.
  2. Blend until well mixed. Voila: breakfast!
