Old Fashioned

Makes 1

  • 1 sugar cube
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Water
  • 2 ounces rye whiskey
  • Ice
  • Orange peel (for garnish)
  1. Place sugar cube in bottom of a rocks glass. Add bitters and a splash of water.
  2. Crush sugar thoroughly with a wooden muddler or strong spoon.
  3. Pour in the whiskey, place a few ice cubes in the glass, and stir until well chilled.
  4. Garnish with orange peel.

I love this recipe ! Reminds me of you making soap at home, Mom.
And it's fun to see photos of your house there and see
Dad in that comfy chair we sat in when we visited,
attempting to use the slow internet :)

I can't wait to hear how the soap turned out in terms
of using it. Does it smell different since it is made with
animal fat? Any other differences from vegetable-based soap?

I tried it with a premium rum and it was also fantastic (Ron Zacapa 23). It was equally horrible with Single Malt Scotch (Ardbeg 10). Going to give vodka a try - apparently allows the bitters to really shine, maybe add Angostura Orange Bitters as well?

Yes Ardbeg would not work at all given it's heavy , heavy smoke. Ardbeg is perfect for floating on top of a Penicillin though.
