Food52 Review: WHO: thirschfeld is FOOD52er whose photos, recipes, and writing impressed us so much, we gave him his own column.
WHAT: The perfect margarita, in our books.
HOW: Just juice, mix, and gulp. But watch yourself.
WHY WE LOVE IT: thirschfeld uses a bit less tequila and more Cointreau that the standard margarita formula, which made us think the drink might be sweet, but it's not -- it's smooth, tart, and drinkable as all get out.

Serves as many as you need

  • 1 equal part fresh lemon and lime juice
  • 1 part Cointreau
  • 1 part favorite tequila, the more expensive the less the hangover
  1. So if you have 1 oz. lemon, 1oz. lime, you have 2 oz. Cointreau and 2 oz tequila. Mix all of the above, stir and serve over crushed ice.
  2. Crushed ice is important, trust me.
  3. Make sure you don't have to go to work tomorrow and enjoy.

2 parts Tequila to 1 part lemon/lime, 1 part Cointreau is standard at our place for last 35 years.

Have you ever tried Talero Tequila, it's such a smooth tequila and when you use it in a mixed drink it makes it soooo much more enjoyable

I recall getting around 2 oz from 2 limes and 1-1.5 lemons (medium supermarket sized). 2oz from each was enough to get a cocktail glass (filled with ice) full. Given you're not topping off huge glasses and assuming a single serving, 25 of each would probably be a good starting point.

I ended up eventually trying with equal parts lime/lemon/orange and it was easier to drink. The original recipe as-is is quite good, I just can't drink more than 1 or 2 of them as it gets a bit powerful. The GF is a big fan of the recipe as-is.

Even with modifications this recipe is a great baseline for a quick and simple margarita.
