Author Notes: Three years ago, one hot day, these were leftover ingredients I had to use up; so from a part of my brain that stores all the ice cream recipes I have ever read...this is the recipe I put together.lapadia

Makes 1 quart

  • INGREDIENTS
  • 2 C reduced fat buttermilk
  • 3/4 C sugar
  • 1 cup heavy whip cream
  • 2 fresh limes
  • Zest from the limes
  • 2 tablespoons vodka (lime vodka would be great)
  1. In a large measure cup with a spout add the sugar and buttermilk; whisk together until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Add all other ingredients but the vodka and whisk until incorporated. Chill in the refrigerator for an hour.
  3. Stir in the vodka and pour the mixture into your ice cream maker; churn according to manufacturer’s directions.
  4. Let sit covered in the freezer (at least an hour) before serving.

Yeah! I was looking for a buttermilk ice cream recipe. We just bought an ice cream maker attachment for the kitchen aid. I will be making this ether as is or with the lemons from my garden. Thank it looks delicious.

Thanks, Suzanne! Yes, if you love lime it is addicting in this recipe, a perfect ending after a Mexican meal...with a shot of tequila and a lime wedge, of course!

You and I are on mind meld again! I have an over-ripe cantaloupe in the refrigerator and I just put the bowl of the ice cream maker in the freezer so I could make sorbet tonight. Yum!

I've made buttermilk ice cream that just wanted to be sweet, but didn't have the smarts to pair it with lime, which plays off the tangy flavor, I'm sure. And the vodka is brilliant! I've got some buttermilk in my fridge just waiting to be used, and this is what will happen to it!
