Good Travel Food for Summer Vacation

We're all about collections over at Provisions -- and we don't want you to miss out on the fun.

Today: We'll be traveling this summer...and we'll be hungry.

There’s a lot to love about summer vacation: lazy days at the beach, that slightly sunburned feeling that keeps you warm into the night, sand on your bare feet, and drinking your morning coffee on a dock on a lake somewhere with no one in sight.

But to get there, you have to get there. Too often that means hot, sweaty days spent in a crowded car, harried hours in packed airports, and train cars with no air-conditioning.

You can’t erase the pains of traveling. But we can suggest one foolproof way of making it slightly more comfortable -- and that’s eating well.

To maximize summer enjoyment and minimize travel stress, plan ahead and pack snacks (actually, that’s a blanket statement for life in general). If you have the time, make your own -- things like beef jerky and trail mix travel remarkably well. Not into beef? Give salmon jerky a whirl.

Fresh fruit is always a safe bet, particularly the kinds with their own natural packaging, like bananas and oranges. If you’re into savory snacks, try roasted chickpeas. We like these ones flavored with lemon zest and sea salt -- with all that salt, make sure you always have a full water bottle with you.

Last but not least, find smart ways to eat on the road. Collapsible, disposable wooden plates are prettier than paper. The sides fold down for easy stacking and storage, and pop up into sturdy picnicware. Cloth snack bags eliminate the need for sticky plastic bags -- just shake out the crumbs, wipe out the nylon interior, and reuse. Find them, and our entire collection of provisions for summer travel over in our shop (we even stocked a miniature cribbage board!).

Now all you need to do is pack your bags.
