Miniature Cakes + a Giveaway!

October 28, 2014

Are you ready for the holiday baking season? Over in our Provisions shop, we make the most of good food by finding useful, beautiful products to go with it.

Today: Why would we ever encourage smaller portions of cake? Mini cake stands, that's why. And because we like to share, we're giving away two miniature Mosser cake stands -- just tell us what you'd serve on it in the comments below by Sunday, November 2nd at 5 PM.

Update: Congratulations to our winners -- Helen Williams with her mini pumpkin pies and PieceOfLayerCake with her plans for sticky buns!

Shop the Story

You all love cake! And we loved your answers -- since we only had two cake stands to give away, stay tuned for an email to your inbox on Tuesday, November 4th with a special cake stand discount so everyone can bake beautifully.

I write about dozens of products every week, but the jadeite milk glass cake stand from Mosser Glass currently tops my list of favorites. It’s adorable, yes, and versatile, yes, but it's the milk glass that I really love. Milk glass is sought after by collectors and designers -- you’ll find entire Etsy shops dedicated to it and pages upon pages of eBay listings for it in every shape and color.

Milk glass has been around since the 16th century, when glassmakers in Venice discovered how to create an opaque effect by adding special chemical particles called opacifiers to molten glass. Fast forward to today: Mosser Glass, based in Cambridge, Ohio, replicates vintage-style milk glass dishes in shades ranging from white to delicate pink to pale jadeite green.

You could choose their full-size cake plate to serve your desserts. And I’d understand: It’s practical and fits a dessert to serve a crowd. While I usually advocate for more cake rather than less, I’m completely captivated by the miniature Mosser plate. At 6 inches wide and only 5 1/2 inches high, it doesn’t look like it can hold much. But you can heap meringues on it, pile it with doughnuts, and serve towering (but narrow) layer cakes on it.

In the interest of full disclosure, I once stacked Wheat Thins on this cake plate and served them to dinner guests alongside glasses of Prosecco. I got enthusiastic compliments all around for my entertaining prowess. That’s the power of good serveware in action.

Now you try it! Small hand-held desserts like whoopie pies or deep-fried apple hand pies would be easy to pile on the stand, or make the miniature pistachio-vanilla layer cake pictured in the top photo.

We're giving away two miniature Mosser cake plates! To enter, tell us in the comments below by Sunday, November 2nd at 5PM: What would you put on this cake stand

I like warm homemade bread slathered with fresh raw milk butter, ice cream in all seasons, the smell of garlic in olive oil, and sugar snap peas fresh off the vine.

I missed the boat on this, but I would probably stack a neat pyramid of finger sandwiches (cucumber/cheddar/chive and homemade gravlax w/ horseradish sauce) on this lovely little stand.

chris November 3, 2014
Ohhhh, I'm too late, but I would definitely showcase a Baby Cake from Flo Braker--The Simple Art of Perfect Baking and Sweet Miniatures. The cake I make is a perfect six inch treat.

I make a small round filled cake for birthdays for friends, usually I put it on a boring piece of covered cardboard, this would be so much more elegant to serve it to them.

Display pumpkin cookies or mini pies at our annual turducken day/friendsgiving!

Abby F. November 2, 2014
A tower of chocolate chip cookies?

amy (. November 2, 2014
Adore that green milk glass! I don't see its petite size as any issue; it's probably the size of things I should be making for just two of us anyways. Pound cake has been in heavy rotation lately, and it would be a fun excuse to get a miniature decorative cake mold and make something pretty and sugar-dusted for munching.

Shien L. November 2, 2014
A fresh seafood platter for two. A red lobster poised right in the center, scampi, mussels, and finally a crown of oysters perched round the brim of the stand.

Merrilee C. November 2, 2014
I would place a sweet little apple tartlet on this beautiful Jadite cake stand and serve it to my beautiful granddaughter on her 19th birthday, today, November 2. Instead of all that luxury, she got a plain old (but deliciously yummy) apple pie (her favorite sweet) at this evening's birthday celebration

Seana November 2, 2014
I have been a life long lover of jadeite from my very first find at a thrift shop as a teenager I was hooked, I briefly had a falter and sold most of my collection at the end of my long marriage as the idea of moving house as a single woman was daunting. Possibly one of my only regrets, I miss it all!
I would serve a salted caramel honeycrisp Apple mini cheesecake on a buttery shortbread crust embellished with a swath of cinnamon whipped cream.

javaFlower November 2, 2014
I make and decorate a small tiered cake for my friends' birthdays and share a one one on one celebration with each of them for their day - this stand would be the perfect showcase for these small cake celebrations!

Meredith M. November 2, 2014
A tower of chocolate cake balls with melted dipping chocolate oozing down from the top. I. Want. One.

Jess E. November 2, 2014
What couldn't put on this? The cutting cake for our wedding next year, a small Christmas pudding (a small flaming cake on a pedestal?! Merry Christmas), a pile of cake bonbons, pillar candle for a part of centerpiece.

Vickie U. November 2, 2014
I would love to share it with a candle on it or place seasonal fruit on it to display. Even homemade cookies would welcome anyone!

Bethany G. November 2, 2014
I am getting married next June, and the color of this stand happens to be one of my wedding colors!! My mini sandwich cookies filled with pink rose buttercream would stack up beautifully on it!

jturner5az November 2, 2014
This would be absolutely perfect for a small kransekake, a celebratory Norwegian dessert that is made with a cone shaped tower of almond cake rings. Hard to imagine...look it up online. It would look lovely for Christmas on the green pedestal with some holiday greenery.

vml12477 November 2, 2014
Homemade salted caramel marshmallows. Piles of them.

LAURA November 2, 2014
I would use this as a cheese tray for a festive goat cheese assortment, one with olives, one with crushed nuts (your choice) and one with chopped dried cranberries. It would be a great way to make the cheese stand (lol) out even more!

Stacee November 2, 2014
With Christmas upon us, I can imagine a ton of ways to use these beautiful cake stands. You could stack up and serve mini bundt cakes, stack colorfully iced cookies to form a Christmas tree, gingerbread house, or make a homemade chocolate truffle Christmas tree. I can already see the goodness on display.

coco November 2, 2014
I'm a student on a gap year right now and I've been devoting many of my days to improving my baking and cooking skills. I've always envied small cake stands in the patisseries of my town but this jadeite hue really stands above the rest. Macarons would be an obvious choice- I think that rose and lavender varieties would be quite successful. Additionally I would love to showcase a small buche de noel atop this cake stand with lots of small meringue mushrooms around the edges- almost too pretty to eat (if I'm successful!) and a terrific holiday centerpiece.

Sarah November 2, 2014
Dainty pastel petit fours would look lovely nestled on this cake stand. Homemade marshmallows tinted in pastel coloring would also be nice.

Edguyver November 2, 2014

I make brittle for dessert a lot...it's nice to bring out at the end of an evening with friends. I like to stack it, and this would be ideal. Now to decide: pistachio brittle or sesame brittle with orange zest and cinnamon...hmmmm...either way, it'd look beautiful on this little gem.

Rachael M. November 2, 2014

Elif November 2, 2014
Mini wedding bundt cake

Sarah November 2, 2014
Every year on July 31st, I make the love of my life an almond praline cake with mascarpone frosting that takes the better part of a full day, and that leaves us with more leftovers than we can manage (we try our best, but after a week of the rich, dense, three-tiered beast, we have to tap out). This cake stand would encourage me to finally, finally get that smaller cake pan I've been eyeing since I made the first iteration of almond praline cake five years ago.

Grandma S. November 2, 2014

Daria S. November 2, 2014
I would serve a tall strawberry Italian cream layer cake on this fabulous stand.

Kristen November 2, 2014
I would serve my grandmother's famous lemon bars that everyone says are the best they have ever had on this cake stand. Not only is it the perfect size, but also its light green color would be very complimentary to my pale yellow dessert.
Also, I make my family's birthday cakes and since they have food allergies, I make up for the limited options in cake flavors by making them very decorative. For example, I recently made a flower pot cake with handmade gum paste flowers for my mom. This cake stand would allow me to serve the cakes in a much more special way.

Keri November 2, 2014
I would serve a tower of oatmeal chocolate chip with walnut cookies

gorzd November 2, 2014

My mom's Mandelbrot bites

Sarah D. November 2, 2014
That stand is begging for my apple bacon pecan spice cake with fluffy bourbon buttercream. I'd have to have a second (and third?) mini cake on hand because it's a Houdini cake -- every time I make it, it disappears.

Jane S. November 2, 2014
I have a family butter pound cake to serve on this with homemade preserves.

Danielle K. November 2, 2014
I'd serve long times memories. There are a few special dishes my mom used when I was growing up and when I see them I'm flooded with memories of big batches of cookies in a certain Pyrex bowl or petite short bread jam prints, or Ice cream cakes served in this vintage aluminum cake pan. Those dishes are just as key in my childhood as the memories themselves. This little cake stand would be a star for nostalgias sake, I'm sure my son could attest to that for years to come.

Abby B. November 2, 2014
I'd build a croquembouche atop it!

Jill J. November 2, 2014
I would serve as an appetizer, a tower of crab cakes layered with my creamy crab cake sauce.

Rhonda H. November 2, 2014
I would get my friend Lucy to make her family secret toffee for me and I would pile up and serve to my family at Thsnksgiving. I can not have the recipe because the toffee is so good I would make every day and weigh at least 400 lbs!! The plate is toffee worthy!

Literary E. November 2, 2014

Mimi H. November 2, 2014
I'd pile it with mini macarons! All in wonderful "milky" pastel colors!

Gera-Chef November 2, 2014
I would proudly serve on these lovely mini cake standa my stack-able creamed fruit and creamed nut cake- specufically my creamed bing cherry cheese cake and my champange pistachio creamed cake. Yes they are little in statue but sit tall and elegant as they are super big in taste and flavor!!!!

Katheleen November 2, 2014
I volunteer weekly at a food pantry and just taught myself to bake cakes at the rather ripe age of 49( I know but they have always intimidated me) for the pantry volunteers. I would use it for each volunteer birthday for an individual cake to take home. A three layer banana cake with chocolate ganache covered with a cream cheese buttercream or a 3 layer bittersweet chocolate layered with raspberry purée, chocolate ganache, and then a cream cheese buttercream are the two latest, both would look amazing!

delectable November 2, 2014
I'd use it for my sister-in-law's wedding and use it for a delectable and golden-shimmering Croque-en-bouche I've been planning to make for so long. My husband's family is half French so that'd be just the perfect (and traditional) thing to contribute to her wedding.

Kristen November 2, 2014
I would make a mini of one of my favorite cakes - Devil's food cake with blackberry buttercream frosting. The puréed blackberries give the frosting such a beautiful shade of pinky purple, it would even match beautifully with the stand!

Hayley November 2, 2014
An extremely tall, very narrow and dramatic three layer chocolate bourbon cake with caramel pastry cream between the layers and drizzled with salted caramel sauce and candied pecans. My boyfriend requested a turtle cake….and I love to bake. Enough said!

Jessica November 2, 2014
I would serve anything from cookies (cranberry oatmeal) to a mini bundt cake

angela November 2, 2014
I think piling a large stack of pancakes on the stand would make for a pretty breakfast table. I also love mini-cakes for those nights when it's just you and a close friend catching up.

A perfect parsnip cake! Small and pretty, seasonal and delicious!!!

Jean N. November 2, 2014

I have a wonderful recipe for a walnut cake that is drizzled with a a coffee flavored simple syrup. The key is to put a small cinnamon stick and some star anise in as well so that the coffee is infused with the flavors of the spices. It is very simple and then served with freshly whipped cream and a dusting of cinnamon. To die for!

I'd serve my Double Stout Chocolate Cake with Black Cherry and Port Buttercream! I'll even throw in the recipe!
DOUBLE CHOCOLATE STOUT CAKE

2 bottles stout (We use Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout)
1 shot strong espresso
2 cups (4 sticks) unsalted butter
1 1/2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably *Dutch-process)

4 cups all-purpose flour
4 cups sugar
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
4 large eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla
1 1/3 cups sour cream

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter three 8-inch round cake pans with 2-inch-high sides and line with parchment paper. Butter paper. (You could use whatever size pan you want. Just remember to adjust your cooking time.)

2. In heavy large saucepan over medium heat, bring stout, coffee and butter to a simmer. Add cocoa powder and whisk until mixture is smooth. Cool slightly.

3. Whisk flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in large bowl to blend. In a large bowl, beat eggs, vanilla and sour cream until well mixed.

4. Add stout-chocolate mixture to the egg mixture and beat until just combined, taking care the stout mixture is cool enough that it will not cook the eggs. Add flour mixture and beat on low speed until just combined. Divide batter equally among prepared pans. Bake cakes until tester inserted into center of cakes comes out clean, about 35 minutes. Transfer cakes to rack; cool 10 minutes. Turn cakes out onto rack and cool completely.
