Peanut Butter

10 Things You Should (or Shouldn't) Eat With Peanut Butter

September 11, 2017

Our interest in strange peanut butter combinations was piqued by a staff member who told us tales of a fried egg, bacon, peanut butter, mayonnaise, and American cheese sandwich in her hometown of Cleveland. This sandwich is not a thing of myth—it's called the Elsie Combo, it's available for $6.25 (pre-tax) at Tommy's Coventry, and it comes as a triple-decker.

Curious about other unusual foods eaten with peanut butter, we asked on the Hotline and on Facebook: "What's the weirdest thing you eat with peanut butter?" Then, we threw caution to the wind, bought two jars of our favorite smooth peanut butter, and set out to make—and try—ten of the most bizarre-sounding combinations. Here are our verdicts:

Wouldn't do it again:

Shop the Story

Peanut Butter and Jelly Omelette:
We wanted to like this omelette—which we recklessly both filled and drizzled with peanut butter and jelly—but we found its most redeeming quality to be its color: Green-hued eggs are a timeless party trick. It's true that we were to blame for the worst part of the omelette (that sludgy ooze)—it was undercooked. With a little more cooking time, however, we can almost imagine that this sweet omelette might taste kind of like an very eggy crêpe or blintz.

Peanut Butter on Saltines, Dipped in Tomato Soup:
While Food52 has positioned itself as a defender of mush, we have trouble getting behind slime, which is the preeminent texture of this combination. Luckily, once you get past the slippery layer of peanut butter slicked with red soup, you have a crunchy cracker coated in peanut butter. Why not skip the slippery soup and go straight for the crackers?

Peanut Butter Hummus:
To make this dip, we swapped in peanut butter for tahini and sesame oil for some of the olive oil. While the texture was satisfactory, the taste made us question everything we knew about hummus (and not in an enlightening way). It was too blandly sweet to substitute for classic hummus and we had a hard time thinking of foods it might actually pair well with.

Wouldn't turn it down (if hungry or paid at least $3.00):

Peanut Butter on a Burger:
While some editors remarked that this burger was "legitimately good," others noted its problematic, hard-to-swallow consistency—the whole package needed crunch. Perhaps the solution is adding crispy bacon

Peanut Butter and Fries:
There was nothing outright offensive about this combination, but we'd rather eat peanut butter with a lightly salted spoon than with a fry—both serve the same purpose, but the spoon is sturdier. The idea behind fries and peanut butter is the same idea behind fries and frosties. Once you've forced a limp fry to do more than simply graze the peanut butter's surface, however, the peanut butter adheres to the fry where a milkshake would soak in—this makes for an experience that's even richer and more intense.

Bacon, Egg, Cheese, and Peanut Butter on an English Muffin:
This combination was enjoyable, yes, but were we surprised? This sandwich felt like a shoe-in. As one editor said, you could put shoe leather or a cricket (or both!) in a bacon, egg, and cheese, and it would taste good. We're not sure the peanut butter added much more than a thick layer of sweetness—we wouldn't be willing to switch out our normal breakfast order for this one.

Would (maybe) make at home:

Peanut Butter and Sweet Onion Sandwich:
This sandwich sounded crazy, but one bite and we understood: The sweet peanut butter tames the sharp raw onion, which is crisp and pungent enough to cut the richness of the spread. It's our new favorite way to eat raw onion (and scare off possible suitors).

Peanut Butter and Hot Sauce Sandwich:
Finding no hot sauce in our refrigerator (the horror!), we made a homemade version using dried chile peppers. Her concoction was combined with the peanut butter to make a firey, addictive paste that got mashed onto toast. Once the burning sensation in our mouths died down, we were pleasantly reminded of a thick, textured version of a spicy Thai peanut sauce.

Peanut Butter, Mayonnaise, Pickle, and Iceberg Lettuce:
No one jumped to try this strange specimen. One editor closed her eyes (which was necessary), took a bite, and got real: "If I forget what i'm putting in my mouth, this might be the best one." We prefer a sandwich with dill pickle to one with bread and butter, as the sour pickles offset the mild spreads. Everything squishes together in the mouth so that the sandwich tastes like no one thing (though if we had to compare it to something, it might be most similar to a tuna salad sandwich).

Peanut Butter and Kimchi Sandwich:
Of all the combinations we tried, this one—due to the appearance and the strong, fermented smell—was the most initially horrifying. But, just like the raw onion, the vinegary, pungent kimchi did a good job holding its own against the oftentimes overpowering peanut butter. The peanut butter, in turn, neutralized the aggressive kimchi just the right amount. One staffer loved this sandwich so much that she even made her own version several days later. The following is proof:

So what did we learn?

  • Peanut butter is a dominating flavor. Some strange combinations—peanut butter and fries, for example—work because all you can taste is peanut butter. For other pairings—like the peanut butter, egg, cheese, and bacon—the peanut butter is sweet enough to be inoffensive. For these types of combinations, we'd rather just eat plain peanut butter or keep the original concept as is.
  • We found that the peanut butter did its best work when coupled with sharp, acidic, and bitter ingredients like kimchi, sour pickles, and raw onion. These work with the peanut butter to create something new and exciting.

What weird combination should we try next? Tell us in the comments below!

I used to work at Food52. I'm probably the person who picked all of the cookie dough out of the cookie dough ice cream.

I must admit I’ve actually eaten peanubutter and kimchi on a saltine around midnight. It was good.

Wanted to share my thoughts on peanut butter and how to use it. I have lived in Asia for 40 years- mostly Japan and Thailand. In Japan I became an addict to miso because of its umami properties, and not just to use in miso soup which the Japanese eat 3 times a day. I bought a book called "The Book of Miso" and it has been my food bible for the last 20-30 years. In the section on sauces, there was a sauce combining miso and peanut butter. I experimented with it and have used it my cooking ever since in different combinations. There are different kinds of miso, so can be used for different tastes- white miso is slightly sweeter and milder, brown miso is the normal miso used in soup, and dark red miso is stronger and used in stews and for frying with veggies. My basic sauce is simply an equal amount of peanut butter (I prefer chunky) and miso. I mix this into a paste and then add other ingredients depending on the recipe I will be making. I started off using this basic mixture on my breakfast cereal or oatmeal and added a bit of honey or maple syrup along with some sesame seeds and/or freshly made cream cheese (which I make myself from homemade yogurt/kefir). Now I use it as a staple sauce which I put in stews, soups, curries and just about anything that needs flavouring. In fact I use miso in place of salt in many instances. For stews and such, to the basic PB and miso I will add chili sauce, mustard, Worst. sauce, etc. Experimentation is the name of my cooking game so anything goes, tho have to be careful to not get carried away. Also, usually the mixture is put in at the end of cooking as miso loses its umami effects if cooked too long. So... please try this combo if you want to liven up your tastebuds and meals, as well as miso is so healthy for you.

My mom had a roommate once who stirred peanut butter into her spaghetti...it always grossed my mom out, but I can see how the tomato/PB combo would be good.

I regularly eat toast smothered first with a layer of white miso, and second with a layer of peanut butter.

While experimenting to find a filling and easy-to-make vegetarian sandwich that wasn't grilled cheese, I created the following: unsweetened peanut butter, thick-cut sharp cheddar cheese, dill pickles, raw onion, mayonnaise, kettle chips and hot sauce on whole wheat. When I tell people about this sandwich they often recoil in mild disgust, but those who I can convince to actually try it are often converted. It is actually my favourite sandwich (though admittedly I like strong flavours more than the average person).

Nick March 6, 2018
Your problem and solution with the burger is pretty much what you said. You need to have the right toppings: Bacon, pickles, onions. No more no less. Well maybe some jalapeno jam.

Melanie S. March 18, 2018
👌🏻well said

Peanut butter, tofu, and salsa sandwiches are wonderful! I've added avocado and shredded carrot to these, and they are truly delicious. Crunchy, creamy, sweet/salty. Also works well with almond butter--the taste is different, but also delicious.

marko P. November 8, 2017
the best ever recepie I an English muffin or whole wheat bread. spread peanut butter on one side. on the other spread mayo and add sliced banana to it. combine and enjoy a taste sensation.

midgeb September 29, 2017
Old favorite since childhood is the standard peanut butter, Miracle Whip, and banana slices. But since I no longer allow Miracle Whip in the house, I've graduated to hominess with peanut butter, dill pickle slices and chopped iceberg lettuce on whole wheat. Love the Stackers pickles for this because they are sandwich sized. Every bite has tart goodness.

cajoto58 September 28, 2017
...my husband has spoonful before most dinners, his favorite would be P&B,cheddar with mayo,my Mom told me about the iceberg lettuce on the P&B sandwich which I can handle, then she blew me away with her best combo...P&B with red 🍇 grapes lined end to end covering the sandwich then I added low-fat cream cheese to seal the deal!Quite refreshing on whole wheat or my favorite rye!No grapes today try raisins ,apple slices...bananas with cinnamon, even dates but don’t forget the cream cheese! And a good hunk of ginger grated into your P&B(Thai-style)makes any meal exotic!Yum!😎

Jim September 21, 2017
For the last 60 years, my Sunday night "dinner" is full sized Post Shredded Wheat biscuits with peanut butter, milk and brown sugar. Can't top that for goodness! Jim

cindy September 20, 2017
I love peanut butter and sliced avocado.

Laurie H. September 12, 2017
I've eaten peanut butter and onion sandwiches as long as I can remember. Love em!. A slice of very crisp bacon is a nice addition to this sandwich.

Maggie September 14, 2017
My Mom was a fan of peanut butter and raw onion *swak!* Don't ask for any kisses!

Steven W. September 12, 2017
Gee, I didn't read all the comments but peanut butter and Fluff is a thing and it's a truly wonderful thing

Dan E. September 12, 2017
Peanut butter, bacon, and ketchup was a classic growing up.

Maggie September 14, 2017
This is an African flavour profile: tomato+peanuts feature in many stews!

Dannell September 12, 2017
My mom LOVED peanut butter and Miracle Whip sandwiches. Do they even make Miracle Whip anymore?!

Scott B. September 12, 2017
Yes they do! That has always been one of my favorites as well!!!!

bill September 12, 2017
peanut butter, bbq, bacon, swiss, jalepeno burger. maybe some carmelized red onions if the mood strikes... can't go wrong.

fitzie September 12, 2017
Peanutbutter on rye bread with mayo, sweet pickle and iceburg lettuce if you have it. My uncle brought this home from WWII. I was shocked when he made one and after tasting it, he had to make another because I ate most of his.

Maggie September 14, 2017
My dad: peanut butter, sweet relish, processed cheese on rye... weird weird weird

Ann W. September 12, 2017
My father in law ate peanut butter in or on almost every thing, including stirring it into his coffee!

Maggie September 14, 2017
OH YES! The new and improved bullet- proof! Genius!

Katy B. September 12, 2017
My mama swore by PB and onion. It was her thing.

Mariù September 12, 2017
It seems no one has mentioned it yet, so I'll go for it: marmite and peanut butter on (preferably sourdough) toasted rye bread for breakfast or as a snack. By chance I also discovered the weird tastiness of mayo and pb and that I could eat it by the spoonful, so I never keep mayo at home.

deborah J. September 12, 2017
Add some lettuce with that

Maggie September 14, 2017
I see absolutely nothing wrong with eating PB+mayo off a spoon

Tammy September 12, 2017
Peanut butter and iceberg lettuce sandwiches. Fabulous. Crisp, sweet, not dry, cold. Mmmmm.

Mj L. September 12, 2017
Jif p.b. with Mrs Weaver's pimento cheese on white bread. Been my favorite sandwich since I was a kid.

aimi September 11, 2017
definitely "kid" food, but when i was like 8, my favorite combo was peanut butter, dill pickles, and cheddar cheese on crackers..
on the other hand, i think one that lasts the test of time is peanut butter, banana, and honey on wheat bread!

Maggie September 14, 2017
Kid food huh? Have you read any of the other responses on this thread? lol

Jana D. May 29, 2017
Peanut butter, fried dates and fried eggs in a pita...it's my compromise when I can't decide between sweet or salty:P

Maggie September 14, 2017
Oh my Jesus :D

John S. April 30, 2017
I've been eating peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches since I was a kid. For the last few years I've been adding Parmesan cheese to them which is even better.

Maggie May 1, 2017
Fresh Parm?

John S. May 1, 2017
I just use the kind you sprinkle on spaghetti. Have you tried it?

Maggie May 1, 2017
Oh no lol I wouldn't eat that :D

Ava G. January 30, 2017
I found this article to be trite. You only had two good things on here and it totally was a bad title. It was also pretty misleading and your food experiments weren't thought out to actually find a variable and concoction that worked. You found the grossest things for shock value and got lucky with 2. Sloppy and not the work I come to expect from a Food52 columnist. Tsk tsk tsk.

Noelle C. January 26, 2017
My favourite breakfast when tomatoes are in season: peanut butter, sriracha, sliced tomatoes, and then a sprinkle of sesame nutritional yeast seasoning salt. It's like a combo of many of your test flavours. I call it Malaysian soup on toast.

Josh B. June 29, 2016
Corn on the cob, smothered in peanut butter, then wrapped in bacon and grilled to perfection

Joshua L. June 15, 2016
Spoonful of peanut butter in your ramen noodles.

Peanut butter and mayo or butter sandwiches were and are common in my house.

Peanut butter, hot sauce, dil relish, and onions on a hotdog are amazing.

David L. March 30, 2016
PB, bananas and brown sugar on toast. Spread the PB thickly on a slice of your favorite toast, evenly pat in a couple of tablespoons of brown sugar and add a banana sliced length wise. Serve with a glass of cold milk.

Amazing

Tara January 10, 2016
From bottom up- place pineapple ring on a plate, put a soon if mayo in the center, a spoon of peanut butter on that, top with cheese. My mom made this weird "salad"in childhood. I've never seen it anyplace else. She used American cheese singles, but you could use whatever you like. I suggest cheddar or yellow American.

John M. November 12, 2015
Peanut butter, mayo and bologna. Make sure it's beef bologna.
Peanut butter and sardines on Ritz crackers. A little goes a long ways.

Scott B. September 12, 2017
A little does go a long way, lots of restaurants in Wisconsin serve a p.b. burger, not enough p.b for over powering, but good!

Austin S. October 24, 2015
Try putting peanut butter in a bowl of chili! If the chili is too spicy, or too runny, the peanut butter helps make it a little pastier and also calms down how spicy the chili is! It's actually really good

Maggie May 1, 2017
Mexican flavour profile, chiles and peanutes in mole

JeffandDebbie R. October 10, 2015
I ate peanut butter and bologna sandwiches as a kid.
At least once a week. Sometimes I put potato chips on them.
YUM.

Maggie October 12, 2015
My dad - peanut butter, sweet relish, bologna & processed cheese. A good way to induce vomiting (y)

PG T. October 3, 2015
Banana 'coins' dolloped with peanut butter (eaten w/toothpick) GOOD - a healthy sub for dessert that really hits the spot. The synergy between the two unctuous textures and deep mellow flavors is terrific. Peanut butter on apple slices BAD - the contrast of the crispy, watery apple makes the PB seem leaden and greasy, and the heavy richness of PB's flavor renders the apple insipid & tasteless.

Maggie October 4, 2015
Peanut butter banana coins FROZEN also delish!
Peanut butter and apple AWESOME - try a peanut butter based dressing over a waldorf salad, or make a PB & grated apple sandwich (or apple jelly works in a pinch). Recently read a recipe for PB & apple pie <3

PG T. October 4, 2015
There's no accounting for taste. I'm so into my PB banana coins lately, and running out of bananas, I tried apple slices w/PB - which I KNOW is a complete classic. I'm definitely in the minority not liking the combo, but I kid you not, it was a total turn-off. The two elements cancelled each other out on my palate. Weird, right?

PG T. October 4, 2015
...and I'm going to try the PB banana coins FROZEN - thanks for the tip!

Eileen B. September 24, 2015
Peanut butter on a grilled cheese sandwich. Delish!

karen K. September 19, 2015
Grew up on 2 sandwiches-- #1) PB and sliced onion on toasted sourdough, #2 PB and Miracle Whip on whole wheat, with or without lettuce. Also substituted PB for chocolate in S'Mores. AMAZINGLY DELISH!!

sam H. July 13, 2015
peanut butter, butter, caviar, raspberry jam, & brie w/mayo on toast.

Bill June 28, 2015
In high school many, many moons ago I used to enjoy peanut butter and mayonnaise on toast as a sandwich. Always said mayonnaise keeps the peanut butter from sticking to your teeth or back of your mouth.

vannie June 27, 2015
Natural PB (no sugar, no salt) on bacon, lettuce, tomato on toast.
Love it.

Johnnie L. June 23, 2015
A great Crunchy snack for us is cold celery stalks with PB smeared inside the groove, and they pack easy for a quick snack at school

Maggie June 24, 2015
with raisins!

Taroun April 30, 2017
Also ate carrots stuck in pb as sub for celery. Good sub.

Peanut butter and bologna on white bread. I was raised on these!

Lettie D. June 8, 2015
A great sandwich for hiking and restoring energy is peanut butter, honey, and raisins. It keeps for two days too.

Maggie June 10, 2015
Try GORP instead - raisins, peanuts, and other trail-mixy stuff - it travels better :)

Bill June 8, 2015
Grape jelly/hard salami sandwich. Italian lady I know in PA recommended it and tried it ... now a staple!

Ashley June 7, 2015
Peanut butter and pickle sandwiches are my favorite!! (I add cayenne to this combo... and to pretty much everything)

As far as the PB&J omelet goes, I have read that and have tried (with moderate success) grape jelly with eggs. Not horrible, just interesting.

Ashley June 7, 2015
And I'm surprised that the tomato soup one didn't work. I often enjoy fresh sliced tomatoes and PB on toast in the summer.

Maggie June 8, 2015
yes, grape jelly and scrambled eggs

spinner39 June 5, 2015
Toasted peanut butter and bacon sandwich .. it's the best

I ate the best sandwich while I was pregnant, Peanut butter, bologna, lettuce and mayo So good. And my grandson made one to eat and my son told my grandson that the sandwich he was about to eat was his grandma's craving while she was pregnant for his dad .... Lol .... try it you'll like it.

John S. May 31, 2015
I would think that they should have used a natural or otherwise "no added sugar" peanut butter for things like hummus.

I get the idea was to use what people are most likely to have on hand, but that automatically hurt some preparations.

cedogg May 27, 2015
Peanut Butter on vanilla Wafers,OMG!
Also One from my childhood, peanut butter mustard and chopped sweet pickles on white bread sandwich.

Susan W. May 18, 2015
Buttered toast, PB, tomato slices, salt, pepper. Bacon if you have it. Good without though. And we like PB on pancakes with butter and syrup of course. We prefer crunchy PB....

Jeff S. May 16, 2015
There is a Japanese Buffet in Tampa that has PB chicken. I saw it and said Yuk! But, then I saw that the customers kept eating PB Chicken. So, I tried it and it really taste great.
All you do is fry your chicken and then spoon some PB on top. If you want to kick up a chicken sandwich >> You know what to do.

John S. May 31, 2015
That reminds me: I have been wanting a good recipe for a spicy peanut sauce I can make at home for a while.

Candyr May 12, 2015
I had hot dogs with peanut butter while in Ohio. Still have them occasionally . Wish I had some hot dogs now.

Vicki S. May 11, 2015
My family made a peanut butter, banana, miracle whip and lettuce sandwich. Spread PB on one side and tope with sliced banana. MW on the other and top with lettuce leaves blotted dry on paper towel. Put sandwich together...have a tall frozen mug of milk.

Maggie May 15, 2015
This sounds yummy but I don't eat bread, so I would use the lettuce as a wrap... yum, crunchy!

whmcdevitt May 7, 2015
the last combo i can believe there's only been a few i could go with........

Scott B. May 7, 2015
Peanut Butter and cream of wheat, is to die for!!!

Maggie May 15, 2015
Nothing and cream of wheat is to die for lol

John S. May 31, 2015
It works with oatmeal too.

Marina F. May 6, 2015
Well... I like to cut apples in chunky slices and spread peanut butter on them. Either that or cut peaches/nectarines in the middle, take the core off and add a dollop of peanut butter in place.

Any kind of fruit of so yummy with peanut butter - who needs jam??

Terri T. May 6, 2015
peanut butter, mayo and bologna sandwich made with sourdough bread. Spread mayo on one slice of bread, peanut butter on the other slice of bread and sandwich the bologna between the two.

Maggie May 15, 2015
Bologna is so weird... but PB & mayo I can get into

karin May 5, 2015
I love peanut butter as well and often make my own at home. I've tried multiple combinations, but the worst one I've come across so far is peanut butter with tofu. The two tastes of soy bean and peanuts are just too strong for the palate.

Maggie May 15, 2015
Homemade peanut butter is the best thing EVER!

Darra G. May 3, 2015
I+love+to+add+chunky+peanut+butter+to+my+mashed+potatoes.++Creamy+taste+with+a+little+texture...yum!+++Dcook

I don't like potatoes but just inherited a bag of sweet potatoes... I can see peanut butter working really well with those! Thanks for the inspiration!

Lynn D. May 31, 2015
Yes! I had a left over roast sweet potato and heated it up with some PB for breakfast. Delicious

Kim May 2, 2015
I also loved peanut butter and iceberg lettuce sandwiches as a kid but my favourite was peanut butter sandwiches with either dill or sweet pickles. Comfort food!

Maggie May 15, 2015
Peanut butter & sweet pickles :D

Kriss D. April 30, 2015
Peanut butter, yellow mustard and Ham sandwich is amazing. Or just peanut butter and mustard sandwich. The mustard cuts the thickness/ stickiness of the peanut butter

Maggie May 15, 2015
Ham and anything is wrong >.<

Maggie April 30, 2015
@Jeff, peanut butter lettuce wraps are yummy but the Ranch dressing bit makes me gag (sorry!)
@Robert, I never eat bread any more but I can almost imagine that... wow! Tempting!

Robert V. April 29, 2015
Didn't read the comments to see if anyone else has this addiction, but I can't get enough of PB on reheated garlic bread

Michael R. April 28, 2015
I am looking for other baked chicken peanut butter recipes OH BTW I just tried pancake batter with extra egg for a dip for deep fat fry chicken, I add season all. It turned out good. Maybe next time I will just add peanut butter to the batter?????

Jeff C. April 28, 2015
As a kid I invented PB, iceberg lettuce, and Ranch or Blue Cheese dressing. Still love it.

Maggie April 28, 2015
@frootjoos, I love the idea of a nagniningning star! It sounds so magical. Well, judging from those I've met, there should be a word that means "nice" twice, because Filipinos are some of the loveliest people I've ever met.
@Fleur, I think putting hagelslag on peanut butter is some kind of cultural transgression. But sambal oelek is amazing - good call!

Fleur S. April 27, 2015
Dutch combo; with chocolate sprinkles. Or with cucumber and indonesian sambal oelek!

Maggie April 27, 2015
@frootjoos Does all Filipino food have two names? (halo halo)

@Jason, one should not mix their meats so... Blech!

frootjoos April 27, 2015
Hi Maggie! It's a linguistic characteristic of Filipino languages--reduplication. For example, twinkle is "ningning", and if you're talking about something like a star that is twinkling, you would say "nagniningning". Lots of people names, typically nicknames are also repeated (eg. "Jojo", "Tintin"). A lot of the Malay/Polynesian languages have the same characteristic.

Childhood favorite sandwich: tuna salad and crispy bacon on toasted english muffin with a crunchy peanut butter shmear. Yum!

frootjoos April 25, 2015
Peanut butter stew--search for "kare kare"--it's Filipino!

Ann V. April 25, 2015
Peanut butter and horseradish sandwiches!

Sarah W. April 25, 2015
An old family favorite, passed down from my grandmother: PB, bacon, and tomato sandwiches. Bliss saved for special occasions when you really need a treat!

Maggie April 25, 2015
@Jeff, breakfast burrito
@brunchbritt, that peanut-tomato combo is traditional African flavours, like in groundnut stew... as for the cracker snack, apparently PB-and-tomato-on-toast goes back to 1930s West Virginia... and New York's PB & Co café makes a PBLT
@aaustin That sounds amazing! The apricot jam+jalapeno would mock the flavor of hot pepper jelly, which I looooooove.
@Melissa, I have a friend who makes almond "hummus", no chickpeas in it
@Jon, I see peanut butter on the menu at all the "gourmet burger" places
@Lisa, when I was younger we would make PB & banana not-dogs, just PB & banana in a hotdog bun :)
@Jeff, your toastwich sounds like the PBLT

Jeff M. April 25, 2015
Also, crunchy pb on a tortilla, wrapped around a banana. Dessert burrito.

I have often used natural, unsweetened peanut butter as a sub for Tahini in Hummus. never had any complaints. In fact, you can use any unsweetened nut butter to make hummus. would never put sweetened, shortening loaded peanut butter in it. ick.

Blue Moon Burger in Seattle, the Code Blue, delicious.
THE CODE BLUE

Pb, crunchy , spam, mayo, iceberg lettuce. On toast. Awesome.

Maggie April 24, 2015
My Mom used to make us peanut butter & carrot sandwiches when we were in public school, and my friends thought it was so weird... but it was so good! Especially with raisins too.

Maggie April 24, 2015
I love mantou but always eat it alone!

Maggie April 24, 2015
Any combination of chocolate and peanut butter is obviously amazing, but that cream cheese salty-tangy is an awesome addition :)

My fathers mistress lived in our house with us and after her afternoon naps she always made a peanut butter and catsup sandwich, she said the catsup moistened the peanut butter, which always grossed out my brother, my mother and me..........

Emilye April 23, 2015
Peanut butter with a plain white Chinese steamed bun ('mantou') and roasted seaweed sheets (the Japanese ones that come in little rectangle snack packets). Tear a bite-size piece of the mantou (preferably still warm), smear with some peanut butter and wrap a little sheet of nori around it - eat, and repeat.

Peanut butter and grated carrot on miracle whip-smeared bread -- carrot adds sweetness and crunch, miracle whip adds tanginess. Family favorite for roadtrips.

NO. I'm sorry Diane lol this is the first suggestion I'm going to vote into the "things you shouldn't eat with peanut butter" column. I can't even justify it on any level.

diane April 21, 2015
Peanut Butter and pepperoni sandwiches -no bread needed use pepperoni as if it were bread -surprisingly good

ab April 19, 2015
And if you've never had Groundnut Stew with either chicken or beef... it is simply, amazing.

ab April 19, 2015
Make Ramen noodles with frozen peas corn and carrots in the water. Pour out almost all of the water and add half packet of "spice ;) " packet. Add a spoon or two or three of pb and stir. If you wish, add Indonesican sweet soy sauce (Kecap manis, ABC brand) , siriacha sauce, roasted peanuts and cilantro. My husband's college invention tastes kinda like a quick pad thai. Super easy but lots of flavor. Don't knock it till you try it!

Michael R. April 18, 2015
I boil chicken in peanut butter sauce then roll in cornflake crumbs, Lowery's season all and marjoram then bake until chicken has a crispy coating. I don't measure so you will have to guess and I boil the chicken until it looks done when cut into. I have added hot peppers, but my family prefers it without. I also have dipped my own in honey mustard and I like that.

Said A. April 14, 2015
I made peanut butter pesto pizza and it was lovely, used it as my pizza sauce.

Maggie April 13, 2015
I'm gonna opt out on the cheese, but there is something awesome about the soft toastyness of melty peanut butter on an English muffin

Erin W. April 13, 2015
Love peanut butter on a bun or English muffin and a nice big piece of cheddar! Mmm salty & sweet!

christine W. April 13, 2015
growing up our favorite sandwich was P.B. mayo and bologna sandwiches. My kids still eat them and now my 10 grandkids are all hooked too...

White bread, sliced bananas, PB, and Miracle Whip. Very few people know about this, as the Angels keep it for themselves.

Peanuts & tomatoes are combined in some ethnic dishes

my husbands favorite....homegrown tomatoes with peanut butter mixed with a little karo syrup.....you can eat it, then go haul hay or other hot summer time work and it won't make you sick....

You need to try putting peanut butter on a homemade hamburger. You will not believe how good this is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My dad loves pb with (oil-packed) sardines sandwich. I don't love it, but it's better than it sounds.

Grilled PB&J, or PB&J French toast... topped with fresh sliced banana

Susan A. March 28, 2015
Delicious...my mom used to make....grilled peanut butter with pineapple ring marshmallow and bacon on a bun

Maggie March 28, 2015
lol Gloria that's awesome, peanut butter should be a condiment on everyone's table! And yum corn syrup! My grandpa used it on his pancakes... which are also good with peanut butter :D

Gloria G. March 27, 2015
My grandmother use to fix Karo Syrup and peanut butter together and put on toast. It was awesome. I've used just regular syrup and it taste great too. Her daughter's family kept peanut butter on the table as a condiment. Which they put on all their sandwiches. Burgers, tenderloin, etc.

Rene March 26, 2015
Peanut butter, syrup, cheddar cheese sandwich is the best. No syrup then use jam (jelly?)

Maggie March 28, 2015
I always eat homemade jam or preserves with cheese, especially fresh Mexican cheeses like ranchero - YUM! (...sin manteca de cacahuete)

Dona S. March 26, 2015
Try reeses peanut butter cups on white bread with mayo. It sounds revolting but it is amazingly interesting in flavor and texture. It's probably super fattening too lol

Maggie March 28, 2015
I could stand to gain about 20 pounds lol I may have to take this on. PS it actually sounds fucking amazing.

Maggie March 24, 2015
Don't waste time slicing the banana, it fits better just rolled up inside the tortilla :)

Oldfoghorn March 24, 2015
When we were young, we used to eat flour tortillas, a smear of peanut butter and sliced bananas. Another thing to try with the burger, is to mix crunchy peanut into the ground meat and then cook as usual. They are delicious and the peanut taste with the crunchy peanuts are delightful.

Maggie March 24, 2015
My Mom used to do peanut butter & raw onion sandwiches. I hate onions, but really like peanut butter on a toasted onion or "everything" bagel. Peanut butter, like tahini, is good as a dip for peppers. Dates & peanut butter definitely (almond better is better) - also with raisins, dried cranberries - I could see most dried fruit. A traditional snack is almond-stuffed dates, sometimes rolled in coconut.
I am totally going to try the lemonade mix, since that is the weirdest thing I have ever heard. Awesome.

Sherry March 23, 2015
My Mom loves her peanut butter and green pepper sandwiches. But I prefer to snack on peanut butter with two different foods: 1. Dipped in lemonade mix and 2. Spread on moist prunes. (This I tried after being at an upscale candy store and seeing dates filled with peanut butter and rolled in sugar. I don't care for dates and thought prunes were a good substitute.)

rrrickets March 23, 2015
been eating B.L.T. sandwiches with p'nut butter for the last 50 years. YUM!!

Maggie March 22, 2015
So, does anyone have anything you shouldn't eat peanut butter with lol
I'm going to vote for avocado.

Cindy T. March 21, 2015
Peanut butter on a hot dog---nothing else, well, maybe some chopped onion.

Maggie March 21, 2015
@Taroun, how is that crazy!? Peanut butter+fruit is the best, why do you think people eat PB&J all the time?? Peanut butter & banana sandwiches are practically a North American staple, why not other kinds of fresh fruit? Besides, way healthier than sugar-laden jam!

Taroun March 19, 2015
Taroun
You'll probably think this is really crazy but it's THE BEST....peanut butter and blueberry sandwich. I grew up with this as a kid. It really hit the spot. To this day it's one of my family's favorites come fresh blueberry time. Friends who've had it since love it also although we still get our fair share of ribbing!

Maggie March 16, 2015
Peanuts/groundnuts are used in much of ethnic cooking! Thai/Asian, Moroccan/Caribbean, African... often combining it with spicy flavours! YUM!

Diogenese S. March 15, 2015
My wife made oxtail and peanut butter stew. It was the most amazing tasting meal. I loved it over rice. She was Filipina.

Maggie March 15, 2015
I went through a stage where I was putting peanut butter & maple syrup on everything... bagels of course, but also cookies, pancakes, in my cereal... maple syrup goes well with anything smoky - hotdogs, sausages...

David S. March 14, 2015
I love to put peanut butter and syrup on my hotdogs :}

Maggie March 13, 2015
A commonality with a lot of these is the sweet-salty combo. While we don't necessarily think of peanut butter as an overly "sweet" flavor (in fact most probably associate it with saltiness), it does have a sweetness to it which pairs fabulously with things mentioned here, like bacon, mayo, even the sourness of pickles. We often forget about the way flavor works and how the contrasting sweet, salty, sour, bitter etc tastes, along with textures such as creamy (peanut butter), crunchy (lettuce, onions), crisp (pickles) all have an influence on how we experience eating. Science is delicious!!

When I was in university I went through a phase of eating peanut butter and chocolate on fresh crusty bakery buns!

Allan G. March 12, 2015
When I started my first job in New York City, I had little money for lunch.
Usually skipped it, but there was a little coffee shop near work, and I first went in and saw how busy it was, and sat at the counter.
Looking for the cheapest thing on the menu, under sandwiches, I found a PEANUT BUTTER and BACON on wheat toast, or white, etc. So I got the sandwich, and a drink and said I hope this is good. IT WAS FANTASTIC. I loved it.
Had it for lunch every day for a week. Of course too much of a good thing...and you know the rest of the story.
So my advice is: TRY IT. If you 've never had it, I think you'll be surprised.
Now, here's another sandwich that surprised me and I really liked it.
A friend made was making sandwiches for us, and asked me if I ever had lunch meat and jelly combo. I said no, and he said try it, so I did. Another surprise in my young life. It was a nice jolt of enjoyment. I really like it, and haven't had another one sine, but looking forward to it.

My favorite sandwich since childhood; peanut butter, raw onion on lightly toasted raisin bread.

Maggie March 9, 2015
I used to eat dill pickle and mayo sandwiches on white bread

Maggie March 9, 2015
My dad did peanut butter, process cheese, sweet relish & bologna on rye

easup March 7, 2015
Warm some nice pastrami in a frying pan, melt a little peanut butter on it and then grill the whole sandwich.

Brenda March 5, 2015
We ate peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches regularly as kids and I still love toast with peanut butter and bacon.

Melissa M. March 5, 2015
Peanut butter, jelly, creamcheese, half-sour pickles and eggs.
Roll it up in a wrap.
MMMmmm.

Amanda March 5, 2015
Peanut butter and sweet pickle relish sandwich. Ate them all the time as a kid

Meagan March 5, 2015
Oh man, I used to love peanut butter on Cheetos. Something about it was just so perfect.

Bruce B. March 5, 2015
OK, you got pretty close to it, but not quite. Here's my gift to mankind: rye bread, crunchy pb [both slices of the rye bread], mayo [again, both sides], Walla Walla Sweet onion, sliced thick [¼" minimum], sliced kosher dill, salt and pepper to taste.

Emily V. March 5, 2015
Peanut butter and CHEESE. Sharp English cheddar with pb is just awesome.

Jeff M. April 25, 2015
Agreed.

Elizabeth P. March 5, 2015
The weirdest combination I've eaten is peanut butter and salami and I've been known to eat a PB & J or PB & Fluff on any available bread product, the most interesting being an onion roll. One of my father's favorite midnight snacks was toasted raisin bread, peanut butter, and swiss cheese. It's not bad.

Cindy B. March 2, 2015
I have eaten peanut butter and mustard sandwiches since I was a child. I have recently added jalapenos to the mix, after learning that the guys at the golf club make peanut butter nachos with saltines, peanut butter and jalapenos!. Yummy!. (On the sandwich, always put the mustard on TOP of the peanut butter.)

Laurel F. March 2, 2015
In August, we go to the beach with multiple families and all enjoy peanut butter and tomato sandwiches for lunch. We use perfectly ripe Carolina tomatoes, fresh ground peanut butter and various condiments. I like mine with mayo on the tomato side. Others enjoy mustard or onions (weird). The point is, lots of people like it.

Sarah M. March 2, 2015
Great article SJ. A Camp Fernwood favorite, while not so out there, was PB&J or fluffernutter with Lay's potato chips as a middle layer to add some crunch.

lindsay |. March 2, 2015
Peanut butter and miso mixed together makes a surprisingly good sandwich spread. I first had this years ago at a restaurant in San Antonio but had forgotten about it until now. Thanks for the reminder.

Shannon March 2, 2015
Did you guys use sweetened or unsweetened peanut butter to test these? I feel like that would make a huge difference.

Sarah J. March 2, 2015
It was Peanut Butter and Company's "Smooth Operator" -- not unsweetened but not powerfully sugary, either!

janetcruz March 2, 2015
We ate peanut butter, mayo and iceberg on white bread my whole young life. We didn't know anybody else ate it too. Sometimes it was miracle whip instead of mayo. That added a bit of tanginess. The peanut butter was whatever came in a gigantic jar from the commissary so it probably add a bit of sweetness. No pickle ever.

Cheazza March 2, 2015
Peanut butter and mayo sandwiches sound gross but are oh-so-good. I will definitely try the peanut butter and onion combo!

Michael F. March 1, 2015
Peanut butter, waffles and maple syrup. Anyone that gives it a try never goes back. I have actually been know to bring peanut butter with me when going out for breakfast. Something our family has always d one. In a pinch it will also work on pancakes, but why would you if a waffle was available?

Rachel T. March 1, 2015
my dear brother told me about this place in England that makes this:
pancakes, peanut butter, smoked bacon, banana, and maple syrup
the peanut butter with bacon and banana may sound a tad weird, but I tried it and I liked it!!
Give it a try!!! (:

Rebecca C. March 1, 2015
A sandwich/pub place, called Clark's Bistro just opened up around the corner from me - Peanut Butter, Strawberry Jam, Applewood smoked bacon strips, and...here's the kicker...Havarti cheese. Even if you already could see how havarti and peanut butter work together (I totally could not), this sandwich, served grilled on sourdough, is so much more amazing than you think!

Deanna W. March 1, 2015
The spicy peanut butter sandwich is my default breakfast. I can't believe it wasn't on the list. I make it with toast when I'm in a hurry. https://food52.com/recipes/30802-spicy-thai-pb-j

Kelley B. March 1, 2015
see, the important thing here is what kind of peanut butter was used. was it salty or sweet peanut butter? natural or jif? I have to say though, this is one of my favorite things on a food blog I've read in a long time. I'm about to ride that kimchi-peanut butter train. (also, I too can vouch for tommy's. really good cheesy toast.)

Sarah J. March 1, 2015
It was Peanut Butter and Company's "Smooth Operator."

Grace March 1, 2015
Peanut Butter. Sauerkraut. And honey.

Emily |. March 1, 2015
Tommy's Restaurant in Cleveland is one of my favorites! They make their own PB and will mix it into any milkshake for a more safe and traditional way to get your PB fix. My mom used to eat peanut butter and salami sandwiches for lunch when I was a kid - wouldn't touch it then, but have tried it as and adult and it's pretty tasty (and packs more than enough energy for the rest of the day!)

Letty March 1, 2015
PB + dill pickles + roast beef + strawberry jam + mayo. Trust. Me.

Lauren K. March 1, 2015
I trust you: this sounds amazing in the best kind of way.

Lynn D. March 1, 2015
PBLT! Unsweetened crunchy peanut butter mixed with Spanish smoked paprika, lettuce and tomato on your favorite toast. So much quicker than frying bacon

witloof March 1, 2015
Michael Ruhlman blogged about his peanut butter and cabbage sandwich habit, which makes me shudder just thinking about it!

catalinalacruz March 1, 2015
Sarah, try the hummus again, but this time with olive oil. It works for me.
A favorite snack is a warm corn tortilla slathered with peanut butter, honey, and rolled around a banana. It's yummy. I live in Mexico, and can walk over to the tortillaria a block away for hot, fresh tortillas. I don't think this would work wirh the supermarket cardboard tortillas.

Jamie W. March 1, 2015
Fried bologna and peanut butter sandwich!!!

Peanut butter and Fritos! One of my favorite childhood snacks. I haven't eaten it in years.

Katarina M. March 1, 2015
When I worked in a cafe my (admittedly weird) lunch break favourite was a toasted sandwich with smooth peanut butter slathered onto one side, marinara pizza sauce on the other, and tuna, mozzarella and green olives as the filling. Toasted in a sandwich press... So much better than it sounds!

Dauntlesst March 1, 2015
Peanut butter and cole slaw---crunchy, bit of moisture/sweet/sour from dressing. Put peanut butter on both sides of bread or it will get too soggy!

aargersi March 1, 2015
I love that you guys did this! Intrepid!

zaqary March 1, 2015
peanut butter and hamburger dills is something my entire family noshes on (it has to be the cheap yellow hamburger dills).

i'm also a fan of peanut butter and grilled chicken sandwiches, especially if the chicken is spicy.

i'll definitely try the sweet onion!

Kstag March 1, 2015
Peanut butter toast with cilantro and Sriracha is delicious!

whmcdevitt March 1, 2015
My favorite combo is peanut butter and bacon on toast. My dad made this for us as kids. Truly delicious!

Mark O. March 1, 2015
You were on the right track with PB and onion. A childhood favorite included yellow mustard.

My favorite PB combo is hotdogs. The onion and yellow mustard are optional on that as well. Very good!

Emily March 1, 2015
Peanut butter and bacon on toast (toast is necessary to get the PB a little melty).
PB, mayo, and banana.

IrishJenn March 1, 2015
Add peanut butter to your BLT. Also, straight up peanut butter and tomato sandwich is great too.

Natasha March 1, 2015
Everything bagel with peanut butter cucumber and Munster cheese

Jeff P. March 1, 2015
One of my faves is peanut butter toast with parmesan and red pepper flakes. It's a great breakfast!

Ashveen P. March 1, 2015
Peanut butter and tinned sardines, mixed with a dash of mustard and ketchup, on toast.

Joanne B. March 1, 2015
Peanut butter and kosher dill pickle -- skip the mayo and lettuce -- on whole grain bread is the best, IMO.

creamtea March 1, 2015
I snack on it without the mayo, lettuce or bread, just pure pickle and PB.

lisa123 March 1, 2015
Banana, peanut butter and mayonnaise.

scotrotsios March 1, 2015
I second that recommendation. Loved it as a child and still love it. It is REALLY yummy! Unfortunately, my kids won't touch it.

Tripe N. March 1, 2015
Peanut butter and cucumber with a little salt is very good.

annaclarice1 March 1, 2015
So happy you like my onion and peanut butter combo. :-)

Katey501 March 1, 2015
When I was a kid, I really didn't like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. What I did like was peanut butter and mustard (only yellow)...and truth be told, I wouldn't eat one now.

Justin R. March 1, 2015
Love this. Thanks for trying all these out and writing about them

Belinda L. March 1, 2015
I particularly have a thing for chutneys/relishes, smoked ham and peanut butter toast. Some of the best ones are red onion and tomato. Also combining peanut butter with gochujang for a quick sauce to cooked starches. However most importantly it must have heat!

Madelijn March 1, 2015
In the Netherlands you can order fries with peanut sauce, which is easier to use than straight peanut butter. And I think it's an awesome combination!
Another good peanut butter sandwich is one with cucumber and hot sauce (sambal).
