17 Make-Ahead, Break-the-Fast Desserts for Yom Kippur

Yom Kippur starts tomorrow and ends Wednesday. Which means, as a time for atonement and repentance, no working, eating, or drinking for 25 hours straight. And since cooking is considered work, it's typically avoided as well. (Plus, if you've ever fasted, being around food is way down there on the list of things you want to be doing during that time.) Because of this, break fast dishes are typically prepared ahead and stashed away for later. And, yes, this includes dessert—arguably easier, though, than prepping anything else, as cookies are a lot easier to pack away than a bagel and lox platter.

We turned to the imitable Alice Medrich for make-ahead dessert recipes that range from the more traditional (cakes! cookies!) to the not-so-classic (mousse! pavlova!). Here are 17 desserts you can make right now and enjoy Wednesday.

Alice Medrich is a Berkeley, California-based pastry chef, chocolatier, and cookbook author. You can read more about what she's up to here.

Usually I make Lokshen Kugel (Noodle Pudding) for break the fast, and mine is so sweet I serve it for dessert. This year I'll be making Alice's Tiger Cake! Cannot wait!
