Our Favorite Food-Related Halloween Costumes

October 19, 2017

Halloweekend is T-9 days away, so celebrations are definitely in order. And while your trick-or-treating days are most likely behind you, that doesn’t mean dressing up has to be. The quest for the perfect Halloween costume can be one of the more stressful, but ultimately gratifying, parts of the impending holiday. This year, choose wisely, and look to the pantry, the fridge, or the kitchen for Halloween costume inspiration. The options are aplenty.

Opt for something bound to incite laughs instead of controversy. Take a page out of Ann Perkins' of Parks and Rec's book, and dress up as a cute eggplant. Don't dress like a sombrero-wearing, mustachioed taco for giggles. A quick Google search for "spaghetti costume" will get you significantly different results than "taco costume." The latter is more popular, and more made fun of—but the implications are murky, to say the least. Instead, peep the Bob’s Burgers costume making its rounds on the internet—some costume manufacturer dubbed their Linda Belcher costume “Supportive Burger Wife” to avoid even the slightest copyright infringements. Linda is fun, funny, and has an awesome gravelly voice. Why not be her for Halloween?

Or you could look to Hollywood for some costume inspiration. A personal favorite of mine is Kyle MacLachlan’s leafy green take on his own name. Last year, our office’s favorite filmic foodie covered himself in stalks of lacinato kale. Behold: Kale MacLachlan. Funky, fresh, timely!

In search of a couple costume? Look no further than our community’s preferred weird but good food combinations. Entertain and inform other Halloween-ers with your take on two foods they never would’ve thought to pair (but really should). Think: chocolate and cheddar, or fries and frosties. Or come up with a novel combo all your own.

“I make up treat bags with candy, stickers, Halloween toys, all kinds of fun stuff. I also dress up. One of the best was a few years ago. Dressed as a chef and answered the door with an iron in my hand. The adults got a laugh out of it... Iron Chef. ”

And then there's the Halloween costume that's got the internet in a tizzy: the sexy fish. I have no idea who ever thought it would be a good idea to give everyone's first pet a salacious spin, but alas, they did. I can't really recommend this costume, but maybe there's some kind of Goldfish Cracker interpretation in there. The snack that smiles back, anyone?

Regardless, Halloween should be fun. Treat it with levity. Throw on a costume and try your hand at this wickedly crunchy seed-heavy bark! But, please, just don’t go dressed as a taco.

What are you dressing up as this year? A box of saltines? A beefsteak tomato? Tell us in the comments!

Please rethink perpetuating cultural stereotypes through Halloween costumes, like your taco suggestion. Thank you.

A few years ago I dressed my lovely Labrador Retriever as a 75 pound roast turkey, we received many tasty comments!

I go all out on Halloween. I make up treat bags with candy, stickers, Halloween toys, all kinds of fun stuff. I also dress up. One of the best was a few years ago. Dressed as a chef and answered the door with an iron in my hand. The adults got a laugh out of it... Iron Chef.

One year I pinned little bags of spices all over my clothing and drug a suitcase to a party and I was a Well Seasoned Traveler.
