Your Favorite Organizing Expert Is Coming to Netflix

February 15, 2018

Marie Kondo, maven of mess mastering, will be taking her talents to the screen. Just yesterday, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Kondo will be partnering with streaming behemoth, Netflix, on an eight-episode, unscripted reality series. She confirmed the news via Twitter.

Kondo is famous, worldwide, for her KonMari method of organizing. The approach, cemented in her 2011 book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, has since been been published in more than 30 countries and brought her international acclaim. As I’m sure many of you know, her method is simple: Hold on to only the things in your life that spark joy, dispose of the rest.

The forthcoming reality TV show, which has yet to be named, will center her trademark philosophy as she applies it to various people in need of material and emotional organizing. Think Hoarders meets Queer Eye for the Straight Guy meets Tabatha Takes Over. I, for one, would be pretty down to watch Kondo come into someone's home and render it a temple of tidy.

“Marie created an incredible global movement to inspire personal understanding through mindful organization,” Gail Berman, the show’s producer told The Hollywood Reporter. “We’ve seen individuals undergo astonishing and moving personal journeys simply by applying Marie’s approach to their own homes, and we are delighted to work with her and Netflix to share her method.”

Recent years have seen Kondo expanding and diversifying her brand—she now has 85 KonMari consultants and tours the world giving conferences. In late 2017, she launched an online course. Netflix, with its global reach of over 117 million, is a boon for her business, and a surefire way to get people across the world decluttering, or at least thinking about it.

I read Marie Conndo’s book before it became a household word. I would follow her on a newsletter.
