Family meal is restaurant slang for staff meal, when back-of-house and front-of-house come together to sit down and eat. This week, the term has taken on another meaning. Family Meal is a new cookbook-for-a-cause from Penguin Random House—and it’s entirely online. Which means you can download and start cooking from it right now.

The collection includes 50 recipes from some of our favorite chefs and cookbook authors including Ina Garten, Samin Nosrat, Hugh Acheson, Alison Roman, Dan Barber, Christina Tosi, Kwame Onwuachi, Ruth Reichl, and more.

So it’s no surprise that there’s lots to look forward to. Think: vegan farm box and pantry stir-fry (Bryant Terry), mushroom bolognese (Eric Ripert), stovetop mac and cheese (Deb Perelman), and creamy sun-dried tomato chicken (Tieghan Gerard).

Family Meal costs $5.99 to download and all proceeds will benefit the Restaurant Workers' Covid-19 Emergency Relief Fund.

According to a survey by the National Restaurant Association, two-thirds of restaurant workers have recently lost their jobs—that’s over 8 million people, many of whom live paycheck-to-paycheck. “40 percent of...restaurant workers live at or just above the federal poverty line,” writes John deBary, co-founder of the Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation, in the book’s introduction. “And this was before coronavirus.”

The Restaurant Workers' Covid-19 Emergency Relief Fund will provide support in a number of ways: “direct financial relief through our partner, the Southern Smoke Foundation; helping non-profits across the country that are supporting the needs of restaurant workers, from food security, mental health, legal assistance, and immigration; and establishing a zero-interest, no-collateral loan program for small businesses to get their doors open again.”
