Audibles For Edibles: Chef's Love to Rock

Science may have figured out what sweetness sounds like, but there's still one thing we're kind of wondering: who is blasting Nas from the kitchen of our favorite restaurant? According to the New York Times, it's the chef. Since we've already extrapolated on the eating habits, personal lives, and various tattoo collections of our generation's rising tide of culinary celebs, it's about time we got down to their listening habits. Nirvana? Bach? Azealia?

If you're Jesse Schenker, the 29-year-old chef behind the West Village bistro Recette, it's Nine Inch Nails or Metallica. ("If a server needs something from me, and I'm in the middle of an air-guitar lick, I'm going to finish it before I respond," he says.) Meanwhile, Eddie Huang's restaurant on E. 14th Steet is just as known for it's hip-hop as its pork buns: "The most upset I’ve ever been at Baohaus is when I walked in and someone was playing Taylor Swift."

I always have music on. Except when I'm sleeping. Right now I'm listening to my Pandora "Loser" radio. Cool stuff. http://bit.ly/I9dGSM I've got a bajillion different stations, but this is probably my favorite.

I like happy upbeat stuff - often the Subdudes, Imelda May, Poi Dog Pondering, The Gourds, Pink Martini, stuff like that. Mr L is usually driving the music so he will play stuff I like and then I can also call out requests. I have been known to sing too ... regardless of skill or quality

I love listening to music I know by heart and love (Graceland, The Smiths' first album, The Shins' early albums) in the kitchen. I end up singing along without realizing it, which weirdly helps me concentrate better on my cooking.

Also sometimes I intentionally put on a 30-minute album knowing that by the time it's halfway over, I'll be done kneading the dough for a loaf of bread.
