Kickstarter Love: Toxic Profits

Each week in Kickstarter Love, Feed52 will feature a Kickstarter project that focuses on food and the community. Basically, it’s about cool people doing cool things with food. This week: a documentary uncovering the impact of toxic pesticides on food and the environment

In the United States, there are thousands of chemicals outlawed because of their impact on environmental or human health. No U.S. citizen or business is allowed to use them, no matter their benefit to crop or profit.

It might surprise you to find out that in spite of this, those chemicals are synthesized and packaged here, only to be sold to other countries where they can be legally applied. 25% of toxic pesticides are shipped to farms in the global south (Africa, Asia, Latin America). Despite that, 99% of toxic-chemical related deaths are in those countries.

If funded, this documentary will put faces to those numbers. The documentary will also look at how toxic chemicals move in the environment. Even countries who outlaw the use of pesticides may still end up with contaminated water -- chemicals know nothing of political borders. Finally, Toxic Profits will advocate change through the use of sustainable and organic practices to transform agriculture as it currently stands.

I love nothing more than a summer tomato (maybe add some balsamic, basil, and home-made mozz). In my free-time, I cook, read about cooking, farm, read about farming, and eat. Food is a basic necessity, but good food ought to be a fundamental right.
