Every Friday, we’re mixing things up with a different kind of food writing. More specifically, food poetry to be read slowly, over your morning coffee. This week, a summer fruit we can still get our hands on.
Around here, we’ve been known to beeline for an heirloom tomato or two. We’ll be honest: melons are no different. For our food poem today, cucurbits star, reminding us of that lovely seasonal interim when we can get both melons and pumpkins at the same market. We’re reminded, also, to have manners when picking our fruit. Take note of the second verse -- in the farmer’s market scenario, we’re kind of the hornet.
Add melons to your list, and have a sweeter weekend.
The Melon by Charles Simic
I have a thing for most foods topped with a fried egg, a strange disdain for overly soupy tomato sauce, and I can never make it home without ripping off the end of a newly-bought baguette. I like spoons very much.
