10 Non-Boring Oatmeal Recipes

November  6, 2013

Raise your hand if you've ever had an unpleasant experience with oatmeal. Yeah, we thought so. Even the staunchest oatmeal advocates have encountered gloopy, bland, oddly textured oatmeal that looks like an alien life form. The culprits can be hotel breakfasts, school cafeterias, or even your great-aunt Edna's Sunday brunch. Unpleasant oatmeal can strike anywhere, anytime -- but never again in your own kitchen.

Let's give oatmeal its due, shall we? This nutritious staple is chock-full of complex carbohydrates, fiber, and deliciousness. In short -- you should be eating more of it. And not just for breakfast (though there's nothing wrong with that...): Oats in ice cream! Oats in risotto! Oats on pizza! That last one was a joke. But it does give us some ideas.

Celebrate oatmeal in all its nutty, chewy, whole-grain glory. Because oatmeal deserves the best, and so do you.

Great list of recipes using oats, very creative. I must comment that at least 2 of your pages make negative comments about older women, if you think that's not a problem try substituting the name of another group in there (even older men seems less 'funny') and you'll see it's not ok. But as for your recipes and hints, they're fabulous.

I have been using instant oatmeal in a few other dishes for years. Meatloaf, 1lbs. of meat of choice and 1 cup of oatmeal. Makes it go the distance of 3 lbs. of meat. Spaghetti sauce, substitute instant oatmeal for the ground meat. Same texture after stirring for a few minutes, absorbs the sauce and can't tell it is not ground meat. Meat balls same as meatloaf, of course add all your other ingredients, spices, etc.

I've never really been a fan of sweet oatmeal in the morning so I tend to make something like your oat risotto here. This week end I fried some shallots in duck fat and then added the oatmeal and liquid to that. Lots of salt and pepper and a bunch of grated cheese and I was quite content.

Lovely round up - I love oats. One of my favourite ways is to make a porridge, but with oats, apples, spice, nuts and dried fruit toasted before....then cooked in soy milk and water. Heaven. Recipe on food 52 (Toasted oatmeal ....)
