Too Many Cooks: What's Your Favorite Cookie?

You'll be hearing from the staff at Food52 in Too Many Cooks, our group column in which we pool our answers to questions about food, cooking, life and more. 

There's something deeply personal about finding out someone's favorite cookie. It's like knowing their first crush, or the name of their favorite stuffed animal growing up; it's a peek into their soul. This week, since we're all fans of soul-peeking -- and because we can't stop talking about cookies -- we asked our team:

What's your favorite kind of cookie? 

Do you like warm, just-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookies with a glass of milk, or airy, melt-in-your-mouth meringues? Tell us in the comments! 

Bryce: Flourless peanut butter chocolate chunk cookies.

Jennifer: Chocolate chip: homemade of course, and hot from the oven. 

Lauren M: Compost cookies from Milk Bar, or homemade chocolate chip oatmeal.

Michael: I love my wife's chewy chocolate chip ginger cookies to death, but honestly nothing can beat plain old chocolate chip.

Karl: For christmas: spritz! Otherwise, chocolate chip.

Christina: Pizzelles -- I eat them by the stack!

Posie: My little sister's chocolate sandwich cookies.

Kenzi: Bryce, I want your cookies. Also Snickerdoodles. Also do Brette's favorite blondies count? Because those are bomb.

Sarah: I make a lot of cookies (it's a problem), but I'm not sure I've ever baked or tasted a cookie as good as Levain's chocolate chip walnut. This is the king of cookies. 

Marian: I think that snickerdoodles are underappreciated. But I grew up on Toll House, and I'll never turn down a chewy chocolate chip. Or a hunk of dough.

Stephanie: As some of you know, I make different types of chocolate chip cookie dough depending on whether I'm just eating the dough or actually baking cookies, so my favorite depends entirely on my mood. Asking me to choose one is akin to Sophie's choice; I only have 22 types of cookies on my holiday baking list. 

If I do have to just choose one type of favorite cookie, it's probably chocolate chip. But I also really love a sable with some citrus zest, or a chewy spice cookie, or melt-in-your mouth peanut butter, or proper shortbread. This is too hard.

Catherine: I love a good shortbread -- just sweet enough that they hit the spot, just salty enough that you can't get enough. Also I love those disgustingly sugary shortening-filled oatmeal cookie sandwiches, because childhood.

Lauren L: Chocolate chip meringue!

Elana: Oatmeal raisin with really crispy raisins all the time! And butterscotch cinnamon icebox cookies during the holidays.

Brette: Oatmeal chocolate chip all the way. In dough form, preferably. If not, frozen. (I'm weird and I like really cold cookies.) But the best dough is the Magical Marvelous Memorable cookies, hands down. 

Merrill: The Silver Palate's chewy molasses cookies.

Gabriella M: I'm a really big fan of the peanut butter cookies at City Bakery...but they are always sold out! Chewy chocolate chip gingerbread cookies are also really great.

Joy: Salty chocolate cookies, like these. 

Kristen: +1 on Levain's chocolate chip walnut. People lie -- you can eat a whole one by yourself on the subway home. Also these. Also these.

Gabriella P: I have a weird soft spot for any white chocolate macadamia nut cookie, but the cookie I eat most often is the Ovenly salted chocolate chip cookie. (Shhh...I ate a Milano for the first time in years the other day, and -- sue me -- they are still damn good.) 

Ryan: Gabriella, you have exquisite taste. (My wife works for Ovenly.) Seriously, those and their flourless peanut butter cookies are the best I've ever had. I eat them literally every week and haven't tired of them. That's true love. 

Maddy: Rugelach -- any fruit and nut filling will do. I'm not as into the chocolate-filled ones. 

Lindsay Jean: Come December I'm all about rosemary pine nut shortbread and these. Any other time, chewy chocolate chip. (Less highbrow -- I'm currently eating Candy Cane Joe-Joe's. Mmmmmm.)

Amanda: I once wrote about a woman who bakes 6,000 cookies every year. Loved her.
