I have two shallow cardboard produce boxes with handles that I use for transporting food in all the time. They're super sturdy, have no flap on the bottom (much better stability), and are free to replace at the local market. Mine are strong enough to hold a large cast iron Dutch oven filled with stew along with utensils and more. I line my box with a dish towel and use more to pad the sides if there's wiggle room.

Also, I finally invested in a two-tier cupcake carrier whose removable trays you can flip upside down for a flat surface. It's great for carrying cakes, cookies, trays of hors d'oeuvres.

Another solid way is plastic wrapping containers under and over (cater wrap) and then rip the plastic and one more just on top

I tend to wrap hot items in towels and set in cardboard boxes on the floor in the backseat. Agree with sexyLAMBCHOPx that no wiggle room is key.

I use two padded, insulated food carrier/totes. One is for a 3qt casserole dish and the other is bigger for accommodates other serving dishes, like round & deep or square, etc. I make sure all my dishes are covered with cling wrap and foiled. I place the carriers in the back seat on the floor, making sure there is no wiggle room while driving.
