I've never known masa to have an overwhelming taste.

The 'too much masa' also made the chili much thicker, even gloppy? If so, try doubling the liquid components of the recipe (including tomatoes) and likely the spices (but,as always when you are riffing, taste the dish as you change it, to guide your choices.)
