Rotten egg--if not black when cracked open, how do you tell?

If you're ever unsure about an egg, try the "sink test" before you risk your nose... Drop an uncracked egg in a glass of water. If it sinks, go ahead and use it; if it floats, throw it out.

The smell will send you reeling.
