The 50's would still be mid-town but anyway I do like Trattoria del' Arte on 7th Avenue at 57th. It's directly opposite Carnegie Hall and get's a big pre-performance rush and then clears out.
Maybe too far west for you but one of my favorite's is Café Luxembourg on W. 70th.
June is right. 7th Ave. is west... 5th Ave. (or Central Park, north of 59th St.) divides east/west. East 50's = midtown east, not UES.
Geography rambling aside, if you want to venture as far west as 7th Ave. and 55th St., Molyvos is very good and fun for Greek food. Also agree about Felidia. (Midtown dining tends to be fairly conservative/biz-oriented/pricey.) If you really mean UES, I can suggest a couple of others.

It would be easier to recommend someplace if you gave a little more info about what you're looking for - type of cuisine, price range, ambience?
