Borough Market is HEAVEN! Also take some time to walk through the Harrods Food Hall- it's beautiful.

Borough Market and Bermondsey especially along Maltby, Ropewalk and Druid Street. It is a must and it is a blast. Try getting a reservation at NOPI (I know, who cares about celebrity chefs), but it was suprisingly easy to get a table, and food was one magnificent procession of Ottolenghi creations. If you like off-the-beaten-path things, Exmouth Market is a lovely street food market in Clerkenwell.

i think i would try to go to the highest rated indian and curry restaurants. i heard an article that curry is dying out in england because the kids of restaurant owners want to be professionals and the chefs are not being replaced. they were even asking for special visas to bring chefs to england from india to replace the retiring chefs. many restaurants have already closed, so this might be your only chance to get curry without going to the mother source.

Just adding on to Shuna's answer that when you're at Borough Market you cannot miss Bread Ahead, IMO. They're famous for their donuts (which are very good) but the brownies and the amaretti are the real winners.

my friend (a Canadian transplant to the UK) took me to maltby street market (that Shauna mentioned) when i visited a few months ago and i was blown away not only by the tastes and smells but by the culture there. it shouldn't be missed but i beieve it's only open on sundays, though that should be doublechecked. also check out Dinerama (http://streetfeast.com/where/dinerama) it was really cool!

YES!

London Review of Books Cakeshop
LUNCH OR DINNER:
ST JOHN BREAD AND WINE - lunch or dinner. be adventurous.
THE MODERN PANTRY - brunch or dinner but brunch will blow your mind. ask for Dougal and tell him I sent you. whatever you do, do not leave there without ordering the tamarillo with manuka honey. you can not get this anywhere else in the world and it will haunt you forever.
ANCHOR AND HOPE worth the wait - get there early. dinner.
ST JOHN get an Eccles Cake. it's like nothing you've ever eaten. you don't need to eat in the fancy dining room if you don't want to make a booking. beautiful space, lively atmosphere.
40 Maltby street
THE EAGLE 159 Farringdon Rd, London EC1R 3AL is great too.

SPEND YOUR ENTIRE SATURDAY HERE and bring money:
MALTBY STREET MARKET & SPA TERMINUS
walk over to Borough Market after and get coffee at MONMOUTH, and cheese & fixings at Neal's Yard Dairy. If they are selling fruit out front, buy two of each. this is where real porridge oats live, and dairy so exquisite you'll think you dreamt it when you talk to another cheese shop in the US.

BROADWAY MARKET is small and lovely. if a booth is selling patterned gingerbread cookies, get two. thank me later.
Possibly the best FRUITERER in London: NEWINGTON GREEN Fruiterer Greengrocer 109 Newington Green Road, Islington. you're a stone's throw from the bus that will take you to the Broadway Market.

Secret restaurant with LIMITED hours: THE ROCHELLE CANTEEN
walk then to LEILA'S SHOP 17 Calvert Avenue E2 7JP 020 7729 8789

On the go? no time to stop and sit down? want something easy and delicious that's not a horrid chain? thank me later. KOSHARI STREET 56 St Martin's Ln, London WC2N 4EA

pricey meal but worth it: MORO 34-36 Exmouth Market
London EC1R 4QE MAKE YOUR BOOKING NOW. if you leave there without having dessert please don't tell me about it. i want to respect you in the morning. if you see PERSIAN CANDY FLOSS on the menu, don't order it. it's so delicious you will be driven crazy by never being able to find it again!

Very interesting chocolate PAUL YOUNG. 33 Islington high St, London N1 8EA. small shop on gorgeous side alley.

feeling adventurous? night owl? eat hot food and fresh squeezed juice at BEIRUT EXPRESS. 7 AM - 2 AM! 112- 114 Edgware Road, London W2 2DZ I LOVE THE LEMON CHICKEN LIVERS and the FATTOUSH. inexpensive! lively! if you have time - explore the greengrocers in that area. I have been known to get tennis ball sized passion fruit and fresh dates!

PS There is also a Neal's Yard cheese store (for cheese & snacks) at Covent Garden (I think the original or at least an early store). Very fine.
