Not sure about the stains, but I have glass containers with plastic lids, and odor bothers me. Try soaking in a mixture of water and vinegar, I found it to be helpful to some extent...
Well, it my understanding that plastic containers will often stain if something with a healthy fat content is stored in them because plastic and fat have a similar molecular structure. Its also my understanding that the bond they form is pretty difficult to break. I find that over time and with several hot washes, odor diminishes to undetectable levels, but I have containers that are still orange from pasta sauce years past.
