A question about a recipe: Vanilla Rice Flour Pastry Cream

I have a question about the recipe "Vanilla Rice Flour Pastry Cream" from Alice Medrich. Can I substitute in rice flour 1:1 by weight for starches in other custard recipes like this?

I wouldn't recommend subbing it for starches (like corn starch). We tried it this weekend, but it could probably be a reasonable sub in any custards that use flours.
