I have a cake recipe I want to try and one of the ingredients is: 1/2 cup dark chocolate, melted. What type of chocolate should I buy?

"½ cup of chocolate" is a terrible, terrible measurement.

That being said, I would buy a bar of chocolate and steer clear of chips (they usually have stabilizers or coconut oil added). If you can get your hands on Valrhona or Callebaut, they're my choice. But generally, if I'm in the supermarket...I go for Ghirardelli or Trader Joe's. I bought Trader Joe's 5lb bar for a chocolate themed wedding cake once, and it was VERY reasonably priced.

I think you could use any brand that labeled dark, bittersweet, or semi-sweet. The higher the % cocoa solids/cacao, the more chocolate beans the less sugar. It's a matter of preference. Choose what you like and can afford. Trader Joe's has a dark 72% cacao chocolate for a screaming deal, $5-$6.

I second that. Love TJ's chocolate for baking! ;o)
