Saw this on a cooking show. Place butter to be used in a ziplock bag. Using warm tap water, fill a bowl with water and place bag in water until you maintain desired softness. I have done this and it works beautifully. BB

Grate it on the large holes of a box grater.

Sorry you had to wait for an answer. Yes, you can cut a stick of butter into cubes and leave them out on the counter to hasten softening. Also the process of creaming, (either by hand or with a stand mixer) prior to adding sugar, will warm and soften it. I hesitate to recommend anything quicker and more dramatic but perhaps other bakers have a microwave recommendation.

I have heard that if you take a thick glass, like a big measuring cup and fill it with boiling water for a moment, then pour out the water and turn it upside down over your butter the residual heat will soften it. I have never tried it, but I hear it can be effective. Google softening butter with glass for a video.

I do agree with the previous answer; cut into little cubes to increase surface area. Or you can use a cheese grater for even faster results. Good luck with your cake!
