Like pierino I have a portable unit that I pull out once in a blue moon and love it. But, on the Viking facebook page I have read complaints about the tops scratching easily.
Daughter-in-law loves hers, mostly for the reasons cited by duckandcake--it's the easiest cooktop to keep clean and it allows for a simmer nearly as gentle as a slow cooker. About the only cooking I've done on it involves boiling water for tea and oatmeal. Actually, now that I think about it, I made grilled cheeses for the grandtwins and didn't have to rotate the sandwiches to get them to brown evenly, but that might've had a lot to do with the skillet.
I have a portable one from Fagor which comes in handy when I need an extra burner especially if I'm cooking with others who are hogging too many and not using them efficiently.
I use it at home, and I love it. Very fast to heat up and seems more efficient than other methods in terms of heat loss and temperature stability. It also seems to keep the kitchen cooler. The only downside is that the copper pots we already own are not compatible. Most new cookware is though, as well as cast iron.
Induction cooktops are the greatest—they heat and cool super-fast like gas, but they're safer, especially if you've got kids around. However, they're expensive and you may have to buy all new cookware if the stuff you have is made of the wrong kind of metal.
LOVE my induction. I have both. A four burner gas cooktop with a grill, and a two hob induction. Precise, easy to clean, extremely good at modulating tempatures (nothing better for a really low slow simmer). Best part was that I did not have to buy new cookwear. My 20+ year old Lagostina pans are all induction friendly. Hubby prefers the gas - men and fire.
