I have a question about the recipe "A Simple Sourdough Starter" from Sarah Owens. Is brita filtered water sufficient?

Yes. The point of using filtered water is to make sure there isn't any chlorine present, which would kill the yeast or severely hamper their start. Filtered water also means there are few to no minerals which could donate a metallic or off taste to the starter.
