What is the closest substitute to eau-de-vie or pear brandy?

if it's just a tablespoon or so, any strong booze with a complementary flavor would probably be ok. I used half elderflower liqueur and half vodka in a Patricia Wells pear cake recipe a while ago and it was wonderful.

Kirsch, grappa, or just regular brandy is usually a fine substitute if the recipe calls for a small quantity.
