I have a front loading washer and this is how I clean mine: First, I clean the seal around the door with a small scrub brush or cloth and a couple of teaspoons of tea tree oil. It is scary how much mildew can be lurking there but do not use any bleach or peroxide that may later damage your clothes. Then pour a couple of cups of vinegar into the detergent receptacle with another teaspoon or two of tea tree oil. Put a half to one cup of baking soda into the drum. Turn machine on to the hottest possible setting for the longest amount of time. This works for me. It is much easier if you have a top loading machine as you can skip cleaning the seal.
