I have looked for almond meal, bag after bag is called almond flour. Is flour too fine for this cake or is it the same thing as meal?

I second Emiko's comment. I use almond flour without problems.

At least here in the USA, almond meal usually refers to ground almonds with their skins left on. Almond flour is made from blanched almonds (skins removed first). I am currently using almond flour from Bob's Red Mill.

I have used almond flour in a bunch of recipes in the past year including original Artusi recipes plus recipes from Emiko Davies and others.

I highly suggest you to visit Emiko's blog. There are many other fine recipes there and she provides much longer explanations and helpful photography compared to the Readers Digest versions here at Food52 (which as is their style only feature a couple of beauty shots).

Almond flour - ground almonds in any form - is fine. I often make this with blanched almonds that I grind myself in the food processor too!
