Cavatelli Maker question

Can you feed the cavatelli dough through the rollers by forming a long roll of dough? Or does the dough have to be rolled out flat. I'm confused. My machine isn't a Beebo maker, however it seems harder to roll the dough out flat to a precise legnth/width. Rolling it into a long strip of dough seems easier and less time consuming.
